When Selena Gomez guest starred in The Suite Life of Zack & Cody, things ended up feeling like a nightmare for her.

“I usually have to be around people. I try to stay out of my bedroom. Bedrooms are real trigger for me. When I was going through psychosis and going through that whole period of my life, it was my bed that I was stuck to. So I try to leave my room and surround myself, even just with one person — and they can be washing the dishes or doing nothing and just being in their presence would really help.”

To Gomez’s eternal credit, she shared with her fans and the world that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. With that in mind, the people behind the publication Self spoke to the psychiatrist Ludmilla De Faria, MD about Gomez’s comments on her bedroom.

According to what Dr. Faria told Self, Gomez’s comments about her own bedroom make a lot of sense. However, that doesn’t mean that anyone who is going through a dark time should avoid their bedroom and solitude the way that Gomez does.

Celebrities who’ve been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, according to Women’s Health.

  • Selena Gomez
  • Mariah Carey
  • Demi Lovato
  • Halsey
  • Catherine Zeta-Jones
  • Patty Duke
  • Carrie Fisher
  • Margaret Trudeau
  • Sinead O’Connor
  • Linda Hamilton

Instead, Dr. Faria explained to Self that it is a great thing for people who’ve been diagnosed with bipolar disorder to recognize their triggers as Gomez has.

“Being able to recognize the circumstances that lead to a manic or depressive episode can be a lifeline for people with bipolar disorder, since those triggers are often harder to identify than the symptoms themselves,”

Unfortunately for Gomez, however, once she was by herself, she struggled to emerge and spend time with other people. Things got so bad for Gomez that she would feel powerless to leave her bed, which is why she now recognizes her bedroom as a trigger.

“It would start with depression, then it would go into isolation. Then it just was me not being able to move from my bed. I didn’t want anyone to talk to me. My friends would bring me food because they love me, but none of us knew what it was. Sometimes it was weeks I’d be in bed, to where even walking downstairs would get me out of breath.”

Selena Gomez’s Outrageous Real Estate Portfolio Proves Her Net Worth May Be Far Larger Than Her Fans Realize

Even though it is no secret that Selena Gomez is very successful, her massive real estate empire proves she is richer than most people realize.

As Gomez bravely revealed to the world, she went through a period of psychosis in 2018 in which she heard voices. After seeking help, Gomez spent “several months” in a treatment facility in which doctors put her on a series of medications.

When asked to offer advice to fans with mental health issues, Selena Gomez has said she “doesn’t have all of the answers”. However, Gomez has encouraged anyone with mental health struggles to
find the right person to open up to
. “I’d say, though, find a friend or a family member you feel comfortable talking with and open up about what you are feeling. It’s very freeing to open up to someone. There is so much strength in being vulnerable.”

On the bright side, Gomez’s period of psychosis ended, and she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder for the first time. Unfortunately for Gomez, however, the impact of the medications she was on resulted in her feeling completely out of sorts.

“There was no part of me that was there anymore.”

After leaving the treatment facility, Gomez was able to find a doctor who guided her as she responsibly eliminated all but two of her medications. The doctor also helped her to accept her bipolar disorder diagnosis and learn how to cope with it.

“He really guided me. But I had to detox, essentially, from the medications I was on. I had to learn how to remember certain words. I would forget where I was when we were talking. It took a lot of hard work for me to (a) accept that I was bipolar, but (b) learn how to deal with it because it wasn’t going to go away.”
