Sophie Turner Credits Game Of Thrones With Teaching Her About This NSFW Topic

Highlights

  • Sophie Turner’s role in Game of Thrones exposed her to explicit scenes and NSFW content at a young age.
  • The script covered all manner of NSFW topics, including oral sex, providing the actress with an unconventional sex education.
  • Some scenes on Game of Thrones, particularly those depicting sexual violence, caused trauma for Turner, who developed coping mechanisms to handle the heavy subject matter.

Games of Thrones actress Sophie Turner is known for playing Sansa Stark, a pampered, bratty, naive girl from the north who only dreamed of a fairytale life that turned out to be sour and all too disenchanting.

Sophie Turner amassed a sizable wealth thanks to Game of Thrones, but this came with challenges. Turner had to quickly adapt to it at a young age thanks to the explicit scenes and NSFW content. And while she did grow up on the HBO series, Sophie Turner got a crash course in sex education thanks to Game of Thrones.

Sophie Had Her Sex Education Through Game of Thrones Scripts

By the time her parents sat her down for “the talk,” Sophie knew it all

Having to grow up on the set of one of the shows with the most NSFW content, Sophie Turner had to accept that she would be exposed to certain things. And when it came down to it, her parents were not of much help when they were supposed to be.

Sophie Turner revealed that Game of Thrones gave her her first lessons on sex education. She said, “My parents sat me down when I was 15, and they were like, ‘Think it’s time to talk about the birds and the bees.’ And I was like, ‘I’m on Game of Thrones. I know everything there is to know and more. I don’t think I need any education.’”

Sophie also expanded on how she felt in another interview, sharing how she got to learn a lot of things.

“I’d be doing a read-through, and we’d be talking about very graphic stuff. The first time I ever found out about oral sex was from reading the script. I was like … ‘Wow! People do that? That’s fascinating!’ … I guess that was my sex education. Being on Game of Thrones.”

Sophie Turner grew up on the set of Game of Thrones. The actress got her big break at 12 when she was cast to play the naive daughter of Ned Stark from a northern kingdom.

Playing Sansa got Turner to experience and see things that were not normal to child actors. Still, Turner turned the love-to-hate character into a phenomenon, providing nuanced performances that deserve their recognition.

Nonetheless, growing up on Game of Thrones was a challenge for Sophie Turner. The actress revealed how exposed to the public eye the show made her feel.

“Having your adolescence being displayed in public, that’s something I really wish hadn’t happened. Being in the age of social media when that’s happening, I think I would be a much saner person if I hadn’t been documented from 13 — your most awkward, uncomfortable, unsure-of-yourself years.”

However, having to suddenly be exposed to the sexual attention of viewers took a toll on the actress.

“Suddenly, everyone’s metabolism slows down at 17, 18, and then that’s documented. My skin and everything. People commenting on it. I was too aware of my body at a young age. And it just kind of took over my mind; it was all I would think about. Calorie counting, everything. Oh, I’ll just eat nuts today.”

Sophie Turner admitted she battled with depression while shooting GOT due to this. Turning of age and learning to accept her body for what it was was hard for the actress, especially on the set of a series that showed graphic content.

Sophie Turner has regrets about Game of Thrones, but the actress established the fact that Sansa Stark is a character that deeply affected her.

“She’s definitely had an effect on me,” she said. Growing up with her and everything she lived through, it definitely changes you. Without the show, I’d be a very different person to the one I am now.”

Having been exposed to sexually explicit content at an early age, Sophie Turner experienced trauma with certain scenes in Game of Thrones.

The actress had to live with one form of trauma after filming heavy scenes where her character was assaulted repeatedly by her on-screen husband, Ramsey Bolton.

“It’s just something that growing up on a show like Game of Thrones, the subject matter was so heavy that I just developed a coping mechanism of just having the most fun in between takes, so I wouldn’t get traumatized. I’m sure I’ll exhibit some symptoms of trauma down the road. At that age, I don’t think I could comprehend a lot of the scene matter,” she said.

The fifth season was the toughest for the then-young actress, who was young but old enough to understand what was happening.

HBO and Game of Thrones received backlash for depicting the sexual violence in the show, with the public calling it gratuitous and uncomfortable. The show, however, did not shy away from certain NSFW content, even though the actors involved were young.

That’s why the X-Men actress learned and grew quickly on the show. Even though Sophie Turner wouldn’t do a Game of Thrones spinoff, she is grateful for having played Sansa Stark because she has experienced great things playing the character.
