In 1966, he earned a Master of Arts in guidance counselling from the University of Kentucky, and in 1967, he earned a Master of Divinity (M.Div.) from Asbury Theological Seminary. In 1980, he returned to the University of Kentucky to complete his Ph.D.
Professional Career
Initially, Ted Strickland served as an ordained United Methodist minister, a psychologist, and a college professor. Additionally, he worked as an administrator at a Methodist children’s home, as an assistant professor of psychology at Shawnee State University, and as a consulting psychologist at the maximum-security Southern Ohio Correctional Facility.
Political Career
Strickland was elected to Congress in 1992 and has represented twenty Ohio counties ranging from the Cincinnati suburbs to the Youngstown suburbs. Moreover, he was narrowly defeated for reelection in 1994, only to be re-elected in 1996 and to each subsequent congress before running successfully for governor in 2006.
Additionally, he established an impressive record on behalf of the people of Ohio during his six terms in Congress. He was instrumental in ensuring that America kept its promises to our veterans and in bringing millions of dollars in investments for roads, technology, economic development, and health initiatives home.
Furthermore, he was a key contributor to the creation of the Children’s Health Insurance Program, a federal initiative that provides health insurance to millions of children across the country.

Strickland was sworn in as the 68th governor of Ohio on January 8, 2007. As governor, he guided a steady course guided by his conviction that nothing wrong with Ohio cannot be fixed by what is right with Ohio.
During his tenure as governor, Strickland focused on various policy issues, including healthcare, education, economic development, infrastructure, tobacco control, veterans’ services, and social services. From 2007 to 2011, he served as the 68th governor of Ohio. In the 2010 gubernatorial election, he was narrowly defeated by former U.S. Representative John Kasich.
Post Career
Strickland was named president of the Center for American Progress Action Fund, a progressive public policy research and advocacy organization, in April 2014.
Moreover, he left that position in February 2015, and on February 25, 2015, he announced his intention to run for US Senate against incumbent Rob Portman. However, he was defeated by a score of 20 points. Additionally, he is the last Democrat to serve as Governor of Ohio in 2023.
