Tom Petty consistently maintained his presence at the forefront, after his four decades in the music industry. He gained massive popularity in 1979 with his hits “Don’t Do Me Like That” and “Refugee,” including his album “Damn the Torpedoes” which reached the number two spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart. In 2014, Petty secured the top one position on the charts with his album, “Hypnotic Eye.”

However, behind his musical success, Petty’s life was marred by a traumatic childhood, a bitter divorce, and a secret battle with addiction. Despite these hardships, Petty strived to be resilient to overcome his issues and live a happy, fulfilling life.

Tom Petty Suffered A Traumatic Childhood At The Hands Of His Abusive Father

Tom Petty revealed to Men’s Journal that his relentless determination to succeed in the music industry stemmed from his childhood marred by the brutal treatment inflicted by his biological father. Petty recalled how his father would come home late and intoxicated and became violent towards him, his mother, and his younger brother.

In his biography written by his friend and fellow rocker Warren Zanes, Petty also shared painful memories of his father’s abuse. “When my father got home…he came in, took a belt, and beat the living s— out of me. He beat me so bad that I was covered in raised welts, from my head to my toes. I mean, you can’t imagine someone hitting a child like that…”

Petty’s artistic inclinations did not align with his father’s concept of masculinity, leading to bouts of anger and violence. “My dad was a hard man to be around. He wanted me to be a lot more macho than I was. I was this real sort of tender, emotional kid, more inclined to the arts…” he told American Songwriter.

Petty carried the scars of his traumatic childhood into adulthood. According to Showbiz Cheat Sheet, he confessed to harboring fear and deep-seated anger from their troubled connection. It was only after Petty became famous that his father displayed friendlier behavior.

However, Petty’s demons persisted even as he left his father’s house and moved to Los Angeles. Petty got involved in a feud with Eddie Murphy on SNL, as he carried the emotional baggage of his past abuse for years until a friend convinced him to seek therapy as the path to healing.

“I had an explosive side. It wasn’t that easy to set me off. But when it happened, I lost it in a big way,” Petty told Rolling Stone in 2009. “I’ve learned to control that. But I had a tough childhood and took a lot of abuse. That rage was in me, and when it got away from me, I didn’t know how to control it. But I could vent it in this music.”

Tom Petty Secretly Battled His Addiction And Mental Health Issues

Before Tom Petty achieved fame with his band, the Heartbreakers, he tied the knot in 1974 with his high school sweetheart, Jane Benyo. However, their marriage, which spanned 22 years, was tainted by problems stemming from Petty’s mental health struggles.

Over time, the pressures of Petty’s burgeoning career and his drug addiction placed an enormous strain on their marriage, ultimately leading to their divorce in 1996. “I was used to living in hell. My parents’ marriage was hell. I lived through being terribly abused as a kid, and then I found myself in an abusive marriage.” Petty confided with Warren Zanes in his book.

The stress of the divorce further plunged Petty into despair, and he grappled with a hidden addiction to heroin. Following his divorce from Benyo, Petty reconnected with his now-wife Dana York, whom he had initially met at a concert years earlier.

Despite their growing affection for each other, the rock icon was grappling with the hidden burden of addiction. “You start losing your soul. You realize one day, ‘S—, I’ve lost myself. I’m hanging out with people I wouldn’t be seen with in a million years, and I have to get out of this.’” Petty shared in his biography.

Eventually, Petty conquered his addiction, completed a treatment program, and married Dana York in 2001. With his darkest days behind him, Petty made a home in Malibu and pledged to devote more time to his family.

Unfortunately, Petty tragically passed away in 2017 due to an accidental drug overdose involving multiple medications. According to a statement from his family and a news release from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, the cause of death was attributed to “multisystem organ failure due to resuscitated cardiopulmonary arrest due to mixed drug toxicity,” and it was ruled as an accident. The medical examiner’s report also mentioned that Petty had coronary artery atherosclerosis and emphysema.
