Tina Fey Refused To Shoot With Sarah Palin Given That She Would Only Be Remembered For That Skit

Tina Fey had quite the run on SNL, but fans typically remember her for the epic Sarah Palin portrayal. When asked if her take on Palin caused the politician’s downfall, Fey was blunt with her own assessment.

“I think she’s the nail in her own coffin, but I think it shined a light on something.”

In addition, Tina Fey refused to shoot an actual SNL scene alongside Sarah Palin. According to Fey, shooting with the politican would mean the skit would be remembered forever, something Tina Fey just didn’t want.

“I didn’t want to be in a two-shot with her,” the actress recalled. “Because I just thought, ‘Well, that’s what they’ll show when I die.’ When I die, that’s what they’ll show on the Emmys. And they still might!”

The Real Reason Tina Fey Stopped Her Sarah Palin Parody

Tina Fey had a very specific reason for ending her Sarah Palin impression on SNL.

However, Fey did have other regrets. One in particular included the Charlottesville sketch.

Fey revealed, “I’m on a plane, trying to write the thing … trying to provide some relief,” said Fey. “You try your best, you try to have your eyes open, try to be so mindful, but it’s also a fast-moving train. I felt like a gymnast who did like a very solid routine and broke her ankle on the landing. Because it’s literally within the last 2-3 sentences of the piece that I chumped it. And I screwed up, and the implication was that I was telling people to give up and not be active and to not fight. That was not my intention, obviously. …

She continues, “I didn’t want anybody to get hurt. … If I had a time machine, I could go back…I would end the piece by saying… ‘Fight them in every way except the way that they want.’ But I didn’t write that in time! I wrote that two days later as I was pacing in my house. It’s painful. I wanted to help, but I chumped it. But the culture of apology is not for me.”

That was a regret for Fey. Nonetheless, Sarah Palin did appear on SNL, performing a memorable rap alongside Amy Poehler.

Sarah Palin Wanted To Appear On SNL To Counter The Perception Fans Had

Sarah Palin did in fact open up about about being depicted as an “idiot” over on SNL. That was a major reason as to why Palin wanted to appear on SNL. She revealed, “I know that they portrayed me as an idiot, and I hated that, and I wanted to come on the show and counter some of that.”

Palin would also showcase her sense of humor, stating that Tina Fey owes her big time given the success of the portrayal.

“If I ran into Tina Fey again today, I would say: ‘You need to at least pay for my kids’ braces or something from all the money that you made off of pretending that you’re me! My goodness, you capitalized on that! Can’t you contribute a little bit? Jeez!”
