Ricky Gervais Said Jim Carrey And Ewan McGregor Were “Heterosexual Actors Pretending To Be Gay, Unlike Certain Scientologists”

In truth, it is hard to duplicate Ricky Gervais’ performance at the Golden Globes. Jo Koy received a lot of heat for his opening monologue, and it was yet another reminder as to how great Gervais truly was.

However, the comedian told several risky jokes throughout his time hosting the Golden Globes. One of them in particular was very risky, taking place back in 2011. Gervais took aim at Tom Cruise and John Travolta, without naming names. Gervais admitted he was nervous to tell the joke and “consulted his lawyer” before telling it.

Gervais said, “Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, two heterosexual actors pretending to be gay,” he began. “So the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists, then. My lawyers helped with that joke.”

Piers Morgan hilariously revealed later on that Gervais’ whereabouts were unknown after the joke. “Gervais not seen for an hour now.”

Ricky Gervais Had Other Golden Globe Jokes Actors Weren’t Happy With

Ricky Gervais told other jokes that upset actors in the past. Among Ricky Gervais’ most controversial jokes included a shot at Tim Allen prior to presenting alongside Tom Hanks. It seems like Hanks was more upset at the joke than Allen, taking a shot at Gervais when he came out.

Gervais joked, “What can I say about our next two presenters?” he said on the telecast. “The first is an actor, producer and director whose movies have grossed over $3.5 billion at the box office. He’s won two Academy Awards and three Golden Globes for his powerful and varied performances, starring in such films as ‘Philadelphia,’ ‘Forrest Gump,’ ‘Castaway,’ ‘Apollo 13’ and ‘Saving Private Ryan’. The other is Tim Allen.”

Gervais later said in regard to the joke, “I have nothing against Tim Allen,” Gervais told THR. “He’s a good actor. He’s probably a nice bloke.”

Kylie Jenner Allegedly Warned Selena Gomez To Stay Away From Timothee Chalamet At Golden Globes

Kylie has had conflict with Selena in the past, and apparently, she didn’t even want her to take a picture with her boyfriend.

Gervais also made a controversial joke about Caitlyn Jenner. He said, “I’m going to be nice tonight. I’ve changed. Not as much as Bruce Jenner, obviously — now Caitlyn Jenner. What a year she’s had. She became a role model for trans people everywhere, showing great bravery in breaking down barriers and destroying stereotypes. She didn’t do a lot for women drivers, but you can’t have everything, can you?”

Once again, Gervais received hate for the joke, but tweeted out, “Suggesting a joke about Caitlin Jenner is automatically transphobic is like suggesting a joke about Bill Cosby is automatically racist.”

Ultimately, Gervais doesn’t mean anything personal by the joke, and suggested in the past that the best part of his humor is when the actors he roasts have a positive reaction to it, similar to Leonardo DiCaprio in the past.

He said of Tom and the Mission: Impossible franchise, “I greatly admire the director Abrams and Tom Cruise is the greatest film star of our generation. It should be fun.”

At the time, Gervais was cast in the film, but ultimately, due to production delays, Gervais was forced to back out of the project. It would’ve been highly entertaining to see Gervais on the big screen alongside Tom Cruise, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
