The One Show presenter Alex Jones appeared to be wowed after seeing Lorraine Kelly brave cold water swimming in the sea. The ITV presenter appeared on the BBC chat show alongside Sir Ian McKellen to promote her new book, The Island Swimmer.
Lorraine, 64, spoke about how she had taken the research for her book “really seriously”, plunging into the bracing Scottish sea to get into the headspace of her heroine Evie. As Alex was asking Lorraine about her novel, the camera cut to a video of the Scottish TV personality running into the waves in a black bathing suit.
“There I am running into the sea!” Lorraine exclaimed. “It takes a long time to get in because it’s quite shallow, but I absolutely guarantee you I swam up to that wreck.”
“Well you haven’t let yourself go, Lorraine,” Alex interjected. “Look at that in a bathing costume!”
Lorraine laughed, before continuing: “It’s wonderful fun. It makes you all zingy and it’s great for your mental health.
“If you’re feeling a little bit down, or a little bit fed up and you’re just feeling it’s too much…
“Because certainly during COVID, I found it an absolute boon. It was amazing.”
Lorraine then went on to credit Orkney, which is an archipelago off the northeastern coast of Scotland, for being the inspiration behind her novel.
“Orkney has been my inspiration for this book and I’ve enjoyed every single minute of writing it,” she said.
“It’s been incredible and, even editing it, I’ve just loved it,” she added, before praising her husband Steve for all his support.
