Neville Staple has been forced to pull the plug on his upcoming tour after being diagnosed with a serious illness. The 68-year-old singer, best known for being in the band The Specials, is suffering from a “serious heart defect.”

The band made the announcement with a statement on social media, saying: “At the beginning of December 2023, the legendary frontman Dr #NevilleStaple #FromTheSpecials was diagnosed with suffering from a serious Heart Defect.

“Neville has been treated at 3 different hospitals and specialist have prescribed treatments and medications to try to control his symptoms, and thankfully things do seem to have stabilised.

“However, specialists have decided that Neville needs to take a complete rest from live performing and touring. Neville absolutely loves performing and is obviously devastated by this news. […]

“Neville knows that his fans and followers will understand the decision that has had to be made and he wants them to know that he is in the best possible hands with his medical team, wife and family. He thanks you all for your love and support over the years and hopes to see you soon.”

Fans have reacted online to wish Neville a speedy recovery. One person commented: “Best wishes Neville, get well soon,” as another chimed in: “O Neville sorry to hear that you’ve been so unwell but rest you must and get better we care about you.” (sic)

A third typed: “Ah, so sorry to hear this. Wishing Neville all the very best for a full recovery and getting back to his old self. I was looking forward to seeing him live this year, but another year doesn’t matter when someone’s health is at stake.”

A fourth chimed in: “Get well soon big fella!! Sending you all the very best for a speedy recovery and here’s hoping you’ll be back on stage soon x.” (sic)

Neville is part of the band The Specials and rose to fame with Number One hits such as Too Much Too Young and Ghost Town. The band was formed in the city of Coventry in 1977, cementing themselves as the multiracial flagship of the 2 Tone movement and punk influences.

The group originally consisted of Jerry Dammers, Lynval Golding and Horace Panter, with Roddy Byers, John Bradbury, Neville Staple and Terry Hall joining a year later.

Terry Hall died aged 63 last year after a brief illness. He had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer shortly before his death, according to the band’s bassist Horace Panter.
