“It was difficult because when you want to do something and you feel like you’re so close, but so far away, that’s how I felt every day,” Metz explained.

“I love rooting for the underdog. I love helping people do what it is that I wanted to do because I have such a passion for TV and film. And it was hard because…what if I’m never getting out of this?”

After doctors told her she could not continue on with her weight and her anxiety and expect to be healthy, Chrissy Metz started therapy

The panic attack landed Metz in the hospital. At the time that the palpitations were happening, Metz thought that she was having a heart attack.

Metz saw her life flash before her eyes and thought 30 was the last year she would see on earth.

“I’m like, What is this? Am I dying? What’s happening?” Metz explained. “It was really scary — really, really, really scary.”

Once she was admitted, Metz found out that she was not having a heart attack. Instead, all the anxiety she was carrying around and not dealing with had manifested into a panic attack, which was diagnosed immediately by doctors.

The anxiety was not all that the doctors addressed, however. They talked about the extra weight that Metz was carrying and told her that if she did not begin to take healthier measures in her life, the panic attack that she experienced would only be the tip of the iceberg.

“You can’t continue on this path,” Metz said the doctors told her.

She went on to say, “I’m like, ‘Oh, this is not just a physical thing. It’s like a soul/spirit/mind/body collective thing. Not everything’s connecting’.”

It was that lightbulb moment that shifted Metz’s perspective on life and on herself.

There’s a lot to know about how Pitch Perfect actress Rebel Wilson actually lost weight a few years ago.

“I realized that … at the core of who we are, we’re these perfect beings,” Metz said, “and we’re not taught that.”

It was then that Metz no longer allowed others’ opinions to affect her. As a result of this shift in thinking, Metz’s weight melted off.

With a renewed sense of getting both physically and mentally healthy, Metz began going to therapy to work on why she turned to food for comfort. Metz also joined a 12-Step Program.

This therapy eventually helped Metz to see that she and her husband were not hap

py together. As hard as it was all to go through, Metz became stronger mentally for it and the weight came off with a healthier diet and a bit of exercise.

“I was so gung ho, I lost 100 lbs. in less than five months,” Metz explained to People. “All I did was eat a 2,000-calorie diet and walk 20 minutes a day.”

While Metz has managed to keep the weight off, that does not mean that she has not had her moments along the way where she stumbled. But instead of quitting, Metz started again, realizing that one mistake does not mean all the progress made is lost.

“So often if something isn’t perfect, we go ‘I quit!’ That’s not conducive to forward progress, and it’s really about progress, not perfection,” Metz said. “If we were perfect, we wouldn’t have anything to attain or achieve.”

Metz went on to say, “It’s peace of mind knowing that I can’t blame other people or make excuses if I’m not happy. Knowing that I feel good because I am being diligent about taking care of myself mentally, physically and emotionally creates self-esteem.”

“Staying consistent and rigorously honest is hard; it’s a daily practice,” Metz stated. “But no one is going to do for me what I need to do for myself.”

Over the years, Metz has continued to work on her mental health and weight loss. When she landed the role on This Is Us, Metz had to lose weight, which led to a change in her mental health.

But by continuing with therapy and using the tools she learned over the years, Metz persevered and became the healthiest version of herself yet.
