As revealed by Austin Butler on the Happy Confused podcast in December 2022, he and the Wonka star bonded when filming for the star-studded movie first began, “We bonded immediately; I really love him a lot. I’ve been a massive fan of his work,” he continued, “getting to be out there, there weren’t a lot of people our age necessarily, so we stuck together. He feels like a brother now. He’s amazing.”
For his part, Chalamet has nothing but good things to say about his friend Butler. In a February 2024 interview with On Demand Entertainment, Chalamet was asked how it was working alongside Austin Butler, “I’m getting to work with a lot of people I admire on this film, like Florence, Zendaya, Rebecca, Anya, just heavyweights in the industry,” he continued, “and you know, of course, my good buddy Austin, he’s here somewhere. I gotta find my boy. You know, I just loved his portrayal of Elvis. I have such profound respect for him as an actor.”

According to a report in Fandomwire, Chalamet revealed that he was inclined to think favorably of Butler prior to their initial meeting because he has a reputation in Hollywood as being an amazing person and actor. He added,
But then, you know, you meet someone that by destiny, by the destiny of the script, you know you’re gonna have to work with. This is a not only an amazing talent, but a great guy.
For his part, Butler revealed to the Los Angeles Times in February 2023 that he and Chalamet’s first encounter was brief before they had to get to work filming Dune: Part Two. Butler added: “We knew a lot about each other [beforehand] and we have mutual friends and colleagues in common.”
