The Truth About Why Some ‘Love Is Blind’ Engaged Couples Are Cut Out Of The Show

Highlights

  • Love Is Blind only features a handful of couples, despite many getting engaged “sight unseen.”
  • Netflix was not prepared for the success of the show and had to cut couples due to production constraints.
  • Some ‘Love is Blind’ engaged couples were cut for production reasons, while others were removed for other more troublesome reasons.

Love Is Blind has been a hit dating reality show for Netflix for several seasons, but a lot more goes on behind the scenes than viewers realize. Only a handful of couples are featured for the full duration of a Love Is Blind season, and many are not highlighted at all, despite getting engaged “sight unseen.”

Love Is Blind first premiered on the streaming service in early 2020. The series works to prove the theory that love is blind, which is where it got its name. Contestants go on dates and fall in love without ever seeing the other person. They then get engaged, and only then are they allowed to interact face to face. After a honeymoon, the engaged couples are put back into the real world to test if their relationship can result in a happy marriage. So why is it that certain Love is Blind couples didn’t make the cut for the Netflix show.

Why ‘Love Is Blind’ Cut Couples From The Show

For the most part, it seems that Netflix was not prepared for the success of the Love Is Blind experiment, and they were forced to make some hard production decisions early on.

When filming season one of the show, Netflix only prepared for a certain amount of couples in regard to complete filming and housing. The streaming network actually assumed they would have less than what they planned for.

When too many couples emerged engaged, Netflix was forced to choose which couples would not be filmed.

“They practically picked names out of a hat because it was hard to predict what the outcomes would be more anyone,” a representative told People back during season one of the show.

The representative claimed cutting couples from the show “truly boiled down to bandwidth” because they “did not anticipate such success.”

“You only have so many crews and so much budget and so much time,” Love Is Blind creator Chris Coelen said about the decision to cut certain couples. “It would be amazing to follow everybody, but you just have to decide what feels like a good group to follow.”

Some couples, however, were cut from the show for different reasons. Two of the couples not seen in season five of Love Is Blind were removed for very specific reasons.

Love is Blind Season 5’s Renee Poche and Carter Wall’s love story, despite them attending the honeymoon in Mexico and making it to the altar, was not shown at all to viewers. Poche said no to marrying Wall at the altar because she “started noticing things that I kind of ignored or blew off that were red flags I should have picked up on.”

Though they had been selected as one of the couples to make the show, producers made the decision to remove them after filming wrapped.

“I got a call a couple months before the show aired, in August, to let me know that our story wasn’t going to be a big focus,” Poche told Pop Sugar. “What I was told was, ‘We’ll just, point blank, say that Carter was awful and we don’t want you to have to relieve that.’”

Tran Dang and Thomas Smith were also cut from season five of Love Is Blind, but for a much more serious reason.

After getting engaged, this couple also attended the honeymoon in Mexico. Dang, however, claims that it was not a joyous trip.

Dang has accused Smith of sexually assaulting her during the trip, and has also claimed that she reported the incident to producers immediately.

Dang is now suing Smith and the production companies Kinetic Content and Delirium TV. Producers of Love Is Blind deny having any knowledge about the claimed assault.

Due to legal reasons, Dang and Smith were completely cut from season five.

‘Love Is Blind’ Engaged Couples That Weren’t Shown

Love Is Blind has been one of the more popular dating reality shows in recent years, and it all airs on the streaming service Netflix. The show first began to air in 2020, and to date it has five seasons worth of love and drama.

The concept of the show is simple: can two people fall in love without ever seeing each other?

Anyone who has participated in the show or watched the show tends to agree that the answer is yes. After spending several days going on completely blind dates, many couples have walked away with an engagement to someone they have never laid eyes on.

While not all the couples have actually gotten married at the end of the experiment, and even fewer have remained married since filming came to a close, the dating reality show still seems to be a success.

Unfortunately, not all the couples were shown to audiences. Every season, a few more couples have gotten engaged that viewers did not see.

In season one of the Netflix original show, two more couples got engaged than what was highlighted. Rory Newbrough and Danielle Drouin left the show engaged, as did Westley Baer and Lexie Skipper.

Before they were meant to depart on their honeymoon, however, the two couples were informed that they would not be a part of the trip due to lack of resources.

Season two faced the same challenges. Two couples (Kara Williams and Jason Beaumont, Caitlin McKee and Joey Miller) did not get the opportunity to continue telling their love stories after getting engaged in the pods.

Season five also has some hidden love stories. Renee Poche and Carter Wall got engaged in the pods, and even went on the honeymoon trip to Mexico. They made it all the way to the alter, but Poche made the decision not to marry Wall. Their entire story was not shown.

Similarly, Paige Tillman and Josh Simmons also had their story removed. Tran Dang and Thomas Smith’s engagement was also not shown.

Which ‘Love Is Blind’ Engaged Couples That Were Cut Are Still Together?

Not to say that Love Is Blind has a perfect success rate, as there are not many couples still together who were featured on the show, but they seem to at least know which couples will certainly not go the distance.

None of the couples that were cut from the dating reality show are still together. Some went on to date for a while, but eventually parted ways.

Whether or not their stories would have been interesting to viewers cannot be determined, but at least no fans missed out on a couple saying ‘I do.’
