The family of Oscar-nominated actor Tom Wilkinson, who was best known for his role in The Full Monty, have announced he has sadly died at the age of 75. No cause of death has been given but it was revealed by his agent that he “died suddenly” with his wife of 35 years, actress Diana Hardacastle, and family by his side.
The statement shared by his agent on behalf of his family read: “It is with great sadness that the family of Tom Wilkinson announce that he died suddenly at home on December 30. His wife and family were with him. The family asks for privacy at this time.”
Born in Wharfedale, Yorkshire, on 5 February 1948 his family moved to Kitimat, British Columbia, in Canada when he was 11.They returned to the United Kingdom five years later and ran a pub in Cornwall
He began his acting career in the 1976 appearing in several popular British TV shows. But it was the 1997 film The Full Monty that turned him into an international movie star.
The comedy about an unlikely group of men stripping, won an Oscar for best original musical or comedy score and was nominated for three others, including best picture and best director. Wilkinson played former steel mill foreman turned stripper Gerald in the movie.
He reprised the role in a follow TV series of the same name last year which aired on Disney+, which caught up with the characters lives in the present day.
Following his success in that film he was hugely in demand as a big screen actor. He appeared in hugely successful movies such as Shakespeare In Love, The Patriot and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind.
He was nominated for two Academy Awards. Firstly as actor in a leading role for In The Bedroom in 2001, and later for actor in a supporting role for Michael Clayton in 2007.

In 2009, he was awarded a Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Film for playing Benjamin Franklin in the HBO limited series John Adams (2008).
