According to Country Living, they even had a tough time after their wedding ceremony. While they were of course thrilled to have committed to each other, Van Halen drank too much and got sick.

Eddie Van Halen passed away on October 6th, 2020. His tragic death was even sadder since he died during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. TMZ reported that he suffered a stroke. He was also struggling with skin cancer, lung cancer, myelodysplastic syndrome, and pneumonia.

According to People, Valerie Bertinelli wrote about Eddie Van Halen in her memoir “Enough Already: Learning to Love the Way I Am Today.” In this book, she explained that they formed a tighter connection before he died.

When she learned that he was ill, it sounded like she realized that she wanted to spend as much time with him as possible. Even though it had been several decades since they had been married, they never forgot the connection that they had.

Bertinelli wrote that she and her son made sure to be at the hospital so they could be by Van Halen’s side when he passed away. She said, “‘I love you’ are the last words Ed says to Wolfie and me and they are the last words we say to him before he stops breathing.”

From what Bertinelli has said in her memoirs and what Wolfie has shared in interviews, it’s clear that Wolfie and Eddie always stayed in each other’s lives. Eddie was a wonderful father to his son.

Bertinelli also shared that when she was still married to Tom Vitale, she made sure that nothing happened to jeopardize that. She knew that it wouldn’t be right to reunite with Van Halen, despite how much they loved each other.

Van Halen had also been married to Jane Liszewski since 2009. She was very honest about how she could tell that neither she nor her ex-husband was truly content in their relationship, but they would never be a couple again.

She wrote, “There is no chance we are going to get back together, but I do know if one of us were to open up, the other one would too, and I don’t want to get into that.”

In 2022, while promoting her memoir, Bertinelli was interviewed by USA Today and shared more about how she felt about her ex-husband. She explained, “I can’t make people understand this, because it’s so personal, but I’ve never felt love like that.”

She continued, “Even through all of the horrible stuff that we did to each other, there were so many more good things. I just don’t feel like I’ve ever been loved like that, in that way, from anybody else. I just feel a connection with Ed that I’ve never really felt with anyone else.” She also said, “Love isn’t a big enough word for the feeling that Ed felt for me, and that I felt for him.”

According to Deadline, she wrote “40 years ago my life changed forever when I met you. You gave me the one true light in my life, our son, Wolfgang. Through all your challenging treatments for lung cancer, you kept your gorgeous spirit and that impish grin. I’m so grateful Wolfie and I were able to hold you in your last moments. I will see you in our next life my love.”

It’s hard not to think about the couple’s love story without becoming emotional. Their relationship is a testament to the fact that time may pass and people may go their separate ways because of life circumstances, but their connection will always remain strong.
