Zoe Ball admits that she freaked out” when she was told the wardrobe criteria for her latest TV job involved wearing no black.

The BBC Radio 2 star is the presenter of MAMMA MIA! I Have A Dream, which follows West End wannabes as they compete to win the roles of Sophie and Sky in the ABBA-themed musical Mamma Mia.

“This show is a different kind of glam to radio,” the 52-year-old mum of two said.

“I was told quite early on, ‘Zoe, no black.’ And I completely freaked out because that’s all I do,” she confessed.

“But I’ve embraced the colour,” she revealed although she does admit to worrying she might look like Peppa Pig if she adopts the current pink trend.

The show is the perfect vehicle for ABBA and Mamma Mia superfan Zoe.

“I’ve seen it many times before, so I’ve been living and breathing it,” she continued to The Mirror.

“Nelly, my daughter who’s 13, and I watched back-to-back movies and then I went to see the cast in the show,” she revealed.

The show is filmed in Greece, which is the setting of the wildly popular ABBA-themed musical, so Zoe needed time off from her radio responsibilities.

However, she says that Radio 2 are also huge ABBA fans so they were happy to accommodate her request.

The eight-part series will see the hopefuls, some with very little stage experience, put through their paces. They will navigate their way through challenges, masterclasses and performances before two of them land the coveted roles.

This isn’t the first time a TV talent show has been used to find lead actors for popular musicals.

Any Dream Will Do on BBC One saw the search for a lead in Joseph And the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and launched the career of Lee Mead.

Meanwhile, I’d Do Anything sought a Nancy to appear in Oliver! in the West End and made a star of Coronation Street’s Jodie Prenger and also movie star Jessie Buckley, who came second in the show.

MAMMA MIA! I Have A Dream launches on ITV2 at 6pm on October 22.
