Best Achievement in Makeup and Hairstyling

Weekly Commentary (Updated Sept. 28, 2023): The highly publicized nose chatter for “Maestro” was much ado about nothing (at least in my humble opinion). After screening it at the Academy Museum this past week ahead of its bow at NYFF, it’s undoubtedly one of the most extraordinary achievements in the last decade.
While I think the monochrome sequences, only about 20% of the film, are when the prosthetics aren’t at their best, the color sequences are otherworldly. I gasped in the opening scene where Cooper is in full older makeup as Bernstein, another undeniable achievement by two-time Oscar-winning makeup designer Kazo Hiro (“Bombshell” and “Darkest Hour”).
But nothing is a done deal this early in the season.
The preliminary voting for the shortlist also provides shocking inclusions and omissions when revealed. Some other solid bets for recognition include Michael Mann’s biographical drama “Ferrari,” which shows the stunning transformation of Adam Driver into the famed Italian sports car enthusiast.
Two comedies — Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” and Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” — will also make compelling cases for branch love.
There’s also two potentials waiting in the wings — Lionsgate’s prequel “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” and Warner Bros’ fantastical musical, “The Color Purple.”

The submission deadline for general categories is Nov. 18, 2023. Preliminary shortlist voting will begin on Dec. 18, with the results announced on Dec. 21. The voting period will run from Jan. 11-16, 2024, with the official nominations announcement on Jan. 23.
The 96th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 10.
