Britney Spears says she “went along” with her conservatorship at first for “one very good reason.”
“I did it for my kids,” she reveals in her new memoir, “The Woman in Me,” out Tuesday (via CBS News).
The Princess of Pop shares sons Sean Preston and Jayden with her ex-husband Kevin Federline.
She temporarily lost custody of them in 2008 after a series of public breakdowns following her divorce from the former backup dancer.
A California judge then placed Britney under a conservatorship controlled by her father, Jamie Spears, that would go on for 13 years.
“Because I played by the rules, I was reunited with my boys,” she writes.
The “Overprotected” singer, now 41, explains the conservatorship made her lose all agency, as Jamie, 71, controlled everything from her diet and hairstyle to her career and more.
“Even though I begged the court to appoint literally anyone else — and I mean, anyone off the street would have been better — my father was given the job,” she writes.
Judge Brenda Penny finally freed Britney from her conservatorship in November 2021 after a series of emotional testimonies in which the “Crossroads” star detailed the abuse she experienced under its restraints.
Since being granted her freedom, Britney has traveled, gotten married (and separated), taken back control of her social media and penned her highly anticipated tome.
“Freedom means being goofy, silly, and having fun on social media. … Freedom means being able to make mistakes, and learning from them,” she writes.

“Freedom means I don’t have to perform for anyone — onstage or offstage. Freedom means that I get to be as beautifully imperfect as everyone else.
“And freedom means the ability, and the right, to search for joy, in my own way, on my own terms.”
Following the leaks of numerous anecdotes, including the reveal that she and ex Justin Timberlake aborted their baby in 2000, Britney said she did not mean to “offend anyone” with her tell-all.
“Hopefully I can enlighten people who feel particularly alone in most cases or hurt [or] misunderstood !!!” the “…Baby One More Time” singer wrote on Instagram.
“Again, my motive for this book was not to harp on my past experiences which is what the press is doing and it’s dumb and silly !!! I have moved on since then !!!”
