Carl Radke defends ‘demanding’ engagement ring back from Lindsay Hubbard after breakup

Carl Radke says he was following “New York state law” when he asked Lindsay Hubbard to give back her engagement ring after he called off their engagement.

“It’s my property, and I wrote her an email one-on-one and asked for the ring back,” Radke said on Thursday’s episode of “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen.”

Radke’s fellow “WWHL” guest and “Traitors” winner Trishelle Cannatella interrupted and told Radke, “No, Carl, I don’t like that rule.”

“It is the law in New York state,” Radke doubled down. “If I purchase the ring, it’s given to the condition of an engagement. We did not move forward with the wedding, [so] the ring is then belonged to me and that’s the law, so I was just following the law.”

The “Summer House” star, 39, was referring to a law that states an engagement ring is “considered a conditional gift” with the condition being a marriage, so if they don’t get married, the bride will “most likely have to return the engagement ring to the bachelor,” according to Badanes Law Office.

Radke shared his explanation one week after Hubbard, 37, appeared on “WWHL” and claimed that he “demanded it back.”

“There’s law –– New York law –– and then there’s etiquette,” Hubbard said last week, while summarizing the same legality that Radke did.

“Now, I did take it off pretty much immediately [and] gave it to my jeweler for safekeeping, and she gave it back to him when he emailed me and demanded it back,” she continued.

Hubbard and Radke also each discussed another pricey aspect of their split –– their $13,000 a month apartment in New York City.

Hubbard revealed last week that Radke still pays for half the rent despite him moving out last August.

“Yes, we resigned our lease a month before we broke up, so I mean listen, that’s something that should’ve been thought through, and it wasn’t, and that’s not a me problem,” she said on “WWHL.”

The former publicist also cited the law and pointed out that “he’s on the lease,” and it’s a “legally binding contract where he owes half the rent.”

Meanwhile, Radke admitted that it was a “difficult situation” but he’s legally required to pay it.

“We have a lease that is not up until June. We’re both on the lease, and I’ve been trying to resolve it and trying to find a solution which would be to sublet it and unfortunately, I have not been able to resolve that, so I’m paying half the rent, and it’ll be over in June. I’m just trying to accept and just move on,” Radke shared on Thursday.

Cohen pointed out that with the ring and the apartment, “everybody got something” in the split.

“I think ultimately the biggest piece of it all is we were not right to move forward with the wedding, and I wish her all the happiness in the world, and I just hope we find happiness in our different directions,” he concluded.

Page Six confirmed that Radke ended his engagement to Hubbard in August 2023 after a dramatic summer, and their relationship woes have been playing out on the current season of “Summer House.”

Most recently, the former couple got into an explosive argument over their communication issues and Hubbard once again asking if he was on drugs, despite him being sober for three years.

Their rocky relationship has played out on the new season, and they most recently argued about his sobriety.

Hubbard argued that Radke occasionally smokes weed, but Radke maintained that she knew he had a drug problem with other more serious substances like cocaine and ecstasy, so it felt like a targeted question.

The episode ultimately ended with Hubbard trying to flee the home.

“Summer House” airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo. New episodes stream the next day on Peacock.
