‘I let him down and I can’t stand it’: Single dad’s heartbreaking admission

Sometimes kids’ casual observations will cut you to the core.

Take KIIS FM Brisbane host Kip Wightman’s four-year-old son Rafael.

“I went and picked him up and we were going to [my partner] Nyomie’s family barbeque, talking about how Nyomie’s Uncle Charlie would be there,” Kip shared on the show, Robin, Terry & Kip.

“He said, ‘I know a Charlie at daycare’, and I said, ‘Oh, that’s cool mate.”

Kip thought Rafael was just sharing a funny coincidence, but the chat didn’t stop there.

“Dad, you know, Charlie’s got a mum and a dad, and they’re all in the same house. They live together,” Rafael continued.

“Ya and sometimes they pick him up together.”

“Oh that’s nice,” Kip replied, wondering where the conversation was headed.

“I want that,” Rafael said.

Kip began sobbing. “I let him down and I can’t stand it,” he said through tears.

Kip Wightman breaks down on air

After four years of marriage, Kip and his ex-wife Amber split up in 2021, when Rafael was two.

The pair were married in 2017 and welcomed Rafael two years later.

Shortly after the divorce, Kip started dating his current partner, Nyomie Essa.

After Kip’s admission, his co-host Robin Bailey comforted him, saying the situation wasn’t his fault.

“You didn’t let him down. Life’s let him down,” she said.

“And what he’s got is double the amount of people who are in his corner loving him.”

Instagram support Kip Wightman

KIIS posted the video to Instagram, and followers flooded the comments with words of support.

“As hard as it is buddy, by sticking around in a relationship that’s not the best in front of a child can be a lot worse,” one person said.

“There’s no way in the world you’ve let him down,” said another. “You are amazing parents and provide the best for him.”

“I’m a grandmother who has watched a similar thing with my son,” a third person wrote. “Very hard. You haven’t let him down as you are there for him. Some walk away and never get involved. He knows he’s adored by both you and Amber.”

One parent shared a story that proved the grass is always greener.

“My husband and I are happily married and our daughter once came home and said, ‘So-and-so has two bedrooms, one at her mum’s and one at her dad’s, and she gets two birthdays and two Christmases… I wish my parents were broken up. You can’t win!” she wrote.
