“The Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon returned to his stand-up comedy roots by appearing as the opening act for comedian pal Nate Bargatze’s show at The Prudential Center in Newark, NJ, this week.
We hear the former “SNL” star’s set had some new material he’s working on — including “a bit on his mom and dad, and his overprotective Irish upbringing,” an audience member told us.
Fallon hadn’t performed stand-up in a decade until recently, but he seems to be getting back into the comedy scene.
Page Six exclusively reported that Fallon did a surprise set at the Comedy Cellar in October when another pal, Chris Rock, urged him to “get back on the bike.”
“The crowd was in stitches!” said a source of Fallon’s act.
The talk show host first started stand-up when he was 17-years-old by doing a bit that included a John Travolta impression.
We are told that Fallon and Bargatze first met 12 years ago when Fallon saw him doing a set at the Stand in NYC.
Since then, Bargatze has become the most booked guest on Fallon’s show.
The TV host had a busy week: He also joined punk pop band Green Day to play some hits for subway riders in Midtown Manhattan for a segment of his show that’s still yet to air.
Fallon, along with band members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool, started off in disguises — but pulled off wigs and fake beards to play the band’s hits, including “Basket Case” and “American Idiot.”
They also performed Bad Company’s “I Feel Like Making Love,” as well as the Kiss hit “Rock and Roll All Nite.”
