Fans of the Kingdom of Hyrule rejoice, a live-action ‘Legend of Zelda’ movie is coming to the big screen.
Video game giant Nintendo is partnering with Sony Pictures Entertainment to bring heroes Link and Zelda to life.
Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the original 1986 ‘Zelda’, is working with producer Avi Arad on what he calls his “passion project”.
“’Legend of Zelda’ has been a passion project for years,” he wrote in a post on X on Tuesday.
“Together with Avi Arad-san, we are dedicated to crafting a cinematic experience that will delight fans and newcomers alike.
“We have now officially started the development of the film with Nintendo itself heavily involved in the production.
“It will take time until its completion, but I hope you look forward to seeing it.”
Director Wes Ball of Maze Runner fame will oversee the project.

Zelda movie coming to big screen
It’s no surprise Nintendo is keen to capitalise on the major success of ‘Zelda’.
The iconic game series has sold over 130 million copies worldwide, and 2017’s ‘The Breath of the Wild’ and 2022’s ‘Tears of the Kingdom’ have been called some of the greatest video games ever made.
The ‘Zelda’ series has 20 official video games released over the years, with the first coming out in 1986. The storyline spans thousands of years as a boy called Link fights to save the Kingdom of Hyrule and its princess, Zelda.
Link’s mission is to defeat Ganon, an evil creature looking to unite three pieces of the Triforce to win unlimited power.
It’s not the first time ‘Zelda’ has tried for the screen. In 2015, Netflix tried to put an animated series into production, but it was never released. In 1989, there was an animated series in America.
The new project comes on the heels of the huge success of the Super Mario Bros movie which grossed $1 billion at the box office.
“Nintendo’s foray into movie production is a strategic expansion of our IP’s accessibility,” the company said.
“We’re not just in the business of gaming; we’re in the joy-spreading business.”
