Madonna surprised Lil Nas X backstage during his debut tour.
In a teaser clip posted to TikTok Friday for HBO’s forthcoming “Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero” documentary, the “Montero” hitmaker appeared shocked when the Queen of Pop stood before him.
“You better put on a show for me,” she said with a stern voice.
“Now I’m nervous. I’m not performing anymore, I’m going home,” he jokingly replied before the video flashed to Madonna hooking her leg around the 24-year-old for a photo.
“Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero” follows the musician on his first tour — which took place between September 2022 and March 2023 — diving into the musician’s background and giving fans an intimate look at his personal life behind the music.
As for Madonna and Lil Nas X, the two musical giants first crossed paths in 2019 when the “Old Town Road” singer attended one of her shows.

“Do you remember coming to my show?” she asked in HBO’s clip.
“Yes!” he responded. “That’s literally — your show literally inspired some things happening here tonight.”
In 2019, Lil Nas X, born Montero Lamar Hill, attended the “Like A Virgin” singer’s “Madame X” show in Los Angeles, where the 65-year-old sipped from his beer and gave the new musician some career advice.
“You in here for the short distance or the long distance?” she asked, to which he replied, “Long, for sure.”
“Work hard. Earn it, baby,” the Grammy winner said.
“I promise you I will,” Lil Nas X responded.
Both the “Material Girl” hitmaker and the “Industry Baby” artist have become faces of the LGBTQIA+ community throughout their musical careers.
On World Pride Day in June 2019, the “Rodeo” singer came out as queer via social media.
“some of y’all already know, some of y’all don’t care, some of y’all not gone fwm [f–k with me] no more,” he tweeted at the time, urging his followers to “listen closely” to the lyrics of his song “c7osure.”
Two years later, he described that moment as one of the “scariest moments” of his life.
“I was afraid because I knew the world was watching, and all I ever saw for boys like me was judgment and ridicule, but it was because the world was watching, that I knew I had to stand in my truth,” he said onstage at the May 2021 Native Son Awards.
In the trailer for the upcoming HBO documentary, the rapper said that his sexuality was the “elephant in the room” when he “was a kid.”
However, Lil Nas X added, “Coming out was very important to progress.”
“Lil Nas X: Long Live Montero” will be released on HBO Jan. 27.
