Malia Obama makes red carpet debut at Sundance Film Festival for screening of her new short

Malia Obama made her red carpet debut at the Sundance Film Festival in honor of the premiere of her new short, “The Heart.”

The elder daughter of former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama braved the Park City, Utah, cold Thursday in a gray overcoat, pinstriped button-down, black jeans and thin gray scarf wrapped around her neck.

She paired her casual look with a pair of brown boots.

Malia, 25, screened her new project under the name Malia Ann — her middle name — and it will be submitted in the US short fiction films category at the festival.

“The Heart” tells the story of a lonely man who is grieving the loss of his mother, who left him an odd request when she died.

“The film is about lost objects and lonely people and forgiveness and regret,” Malia said in a “Meet the Artist” video for the festival, “but I also think it works hard to uncover where tenderness and closeness can exist in those things.”

Malia concluded her message saying that she hoped her short film makes people “feel a bit less lonely, or at least reminds you not to forget about the people who are.”

The director’s famous parents didn’t attend the event, as they were celebrating the “Becoming” author’s 60th birthday.

While the event served as her first-ever red carpet, it wasn’t Malia’s first trip to Sundance; the filmmaker previously attended the festival years ago to catch a screening of the edgy movie “Beach Rats.”

The former first daughter has been interested in the film industry for years, having landed an internship at the Weinstein Company in 2017 in New York City. By that time, she had already worked on former HBO show “Girls” and the CBS show “Extant.”

Michelle, 60, revealed in 2022 that Malia and her 22-year-old sister, Sasha, moved to Los Angeles and were sharing a home.

She also told the “Today” show that seeming her daughters “in that place where they’re one another’s support systems and they’ve got each other’s backs, it’s the thing that a mother would want.”
