‘The View’ co-hosts defend Jo Koy over Golden Globes hosting backlash: ‘Get a sense of humor’

“The View” co-hosts defended Jo Koy after he faced backlash for a slew of controversial jokes he made at the 2024 Golden Globes.

Whoopi Goldberg broached the topic on Monday’s episode of the daytime show, noting that “it was a rough room for him.”

Koy, 52, kicked off the ceremony with a sexist joke about “Barbie” and took a dig at Taylor Swift’s relationship with Travis Kelce before blaming the show’s writers for giving him bad material.

“These gigs, these hosting gigs are brutal. They’re just brutal,” Goldberg, 68, told her fellow panelists on the ABC show.

“If you don’t know the room, if you’ve not been in these rooms before and you’re thrust out there, it’s hit or miss,” she went on.

“[But Jo is] as good as it gets when it comes to stand-ups.”

Sara Haines also defended the comic and instead took issue with the crowd’s lackluster reaction to his jokes.

“I love Jo Koy and the whole time I was nervous for him because I think he’s so funny. He’s kind, he’s good, all the things,” Haines, 46, argued.

“What bothers me more in watching this is, get a sense of humor, because we need to protect these national treasures called our comedians because life needs them.”

She also noted that Koy was “punching up” with his jokes.

“No one feels sorry. Just smile,” Haines added.

Meanwhile, noted Swiftie Alyssa Farah Griffin weighed in on whether Koy’s comment about the “Lover” singer was “that bad” — and if it warranted her icy reception.

“I was a little surprised,” Griffin, 34, said of Swift’s reaction to the line.

“I thought that was kind of a lay-up … I thought he got very good as the night went on.”

During his opening monologue, Koy teased a number of the A-listers seated inside The Beverly Hilton, including the “Cruel Summer” hitmaker, 34, who attended the fête without the Kansas City Chiefs star.

“The big difference between the Golden Globes and the NFL? At the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift,” the comedian quipped.

When the camera panned to the “Bad Blood” chart-topper, she was seen shooting Koy an icy glare as she took a sip of her champagne.

The “Chelsea Lately” alum later defended his joke.

“Aww, man, it was cute. I was just saying it was cute,” Koy told “Entertainment Tonight.” “I was just saying it’s less cutaways, that’s all.”

Koy was also slammed by viewers for joking that “’Oppenheimer’ is based on a 721-page Pulitzer prize-winning book about The Manhattan Project and ‘Barbie’ is on a plastic doll with big boobies.”

When he realized his jokes were bombing, Koy shifted the blame to the writers.

“I got the gig 10 days ago. You want a perfect monologue? Yo, shut up … I wrote some of these, and they’re the ones you’re laughing at,” he claimed.
