Biden’s health department FINALLY bans funding to the Wuhan laboratory linked to Covid’s genesis… but WHY only for 10 years?

  • Biden’s Health and Human Services department formally banned funding to WIV
  • Officials say WIV violated biosafety terms and increased viral activity 10-fold

The Biden administration has officially barred taxpayer dollars from being funneled to a controversial Chinese lab long suspected of causing the Covid pandemic.

This week, an official statement from the Department of Health and Human Services said the Wuhan Institute of Virology failed to prove its experiments were safe.

EcoHealth Alliance- a New York-based non-profit – was awarded $8 million from the National Institutes of Health between 2014 and 2021 to be subcontracted to research facilities such as the WIV, which got about $3.7 million.

HHS said the Wuhan researchers violated the terms for receiving federal grant money because poor biosafety protocols at the lab ‘possibly did lead or could lead to health issues or other unacceptable outcomes’.

The ban on federal funding to the WIV will last a decade, which is seven years longer than the average suspension, though it is unlikely that the move will shield the agency from criticism about funding the experiments in the first place.

The Biden Administration announced it was suspending the Wuhan Institute of Virology's (WIV) access to government funding and issued a 10-year ban after the lab could not provide sufficient documentation on its biosafety protocols and security measures

The question of whether the global outbreak began with a spillover from wildlife sold at the market or leaked out of the Wuhan lab just eight miles across the Yangtze River has given rise to fierce debate. Some studies point to a natural spillover at the Huanan wildlife market. Positive swab samples of floors, cages and counters also track the virus back to stalls in the southwestern corner of the market (bottom left), where animals with the potential to harbour Covid were sold for meat or fur at the time (bottom right)

It marked a major win in the eyes of lawmakers who allege the biolab was the genesis of the pandemic, with one calling this ‘an essential and obvious step in the right direction.’

The 10-year ban was first proposed in July when HHS outlined the Wuhan lab’s various failures to hand over detailed lab notebooks and documents about its experimentation with bat coronaviruses tested in mice.

According to the federal health agency, researchers in Wuhan had conducted experiments with coronaviruses beyond what the terms of the grant allowed. It also alleged that the WIV maintained poor standards for biosafety, potentially putting people at risk.

‘Due to WIV’s disregard of the NIH’s requests that WIV provide the required materials to support its research… the NIH’s conclusion that WIV research likely violated protocols of the NIH regarding biosafety is undisputed.

‘As such, there is risk that WIV not only previously violated, but is currently violating, and will continue to violate, protocols of the NIH on biosafety.’

EcoHealth was not barred from receiving federal grant money that it would then distribute.

In fact, the Biden administration recently resurrected a financial alliance between the government and EcoHealth which would see the latter getting $2.3 million annually to fund scientific research.

The agreement had ended under the Trump administration in April 2020. But money has still been flowing to labs like the WIV.

Between 2015 and 2023, at least seven US entities supplied NIH grant money to labs in China performing animal experiments, totaling $3,306,061

NIH grants given more recently to US academic institutions to fund research would often be shared with animal testing labs overseas including the WIV.

In total, roughly $15 million in government grants have gone toward animal experiments in foreign labs from 2013 to this year.

The message to WIV from HHS was one of several sent by phone, email, fax, and international mail.

The emails were rendered undeliverable to the addresses officials had, the fax number was inactive, and the notice sent through the post was returned to HHS headquarters in DC.

The formal debarment notice did not name the coronavirus as the one to have been manipulated to such an alarming degree.

But that did not stop lab leak theory proponents from taking this move as confirmation that the people in the highest levels of government believe the pandemic started in that lab and leeched out from there.

Ohio Republican congressman Brad Wenstrup said: ‘This is especially timely as mounting evidence and intelligence continue to suggest that the COVID-19 pandemic originated from a laboratory failure in Wuhan.

Rep Wenstrup, who serves as chairman of the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic added: ‘Rewarding the likely source of a global pandemic with American resources will only lead to more future health risks.’

The lab leak theory has gained significant traction in the past couple of years as vaccinations and general immunity have removed the public from the worst days of the pandemic.

This has culminated in a Republican-authored congressional report last December that revealed ‘indications’ the WIV had a lab incident tied to China’s bioweapons program that led to covid being ‘spilled over’ to the general public.

The theory has also received backing from government entities.

The Department of Energy believes, albeit with ‘low confidence’ that the pandemic originated from a lab leak. The FBI came to the same conclusion with ‘moderate’ confidence.

But overall the intelligence community remains split on the topic.
