AC Milan closely monitoring Viktor Gyokeres after impressive Sporting CP form

AC Milan are closely monitoring the impressive performances of Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres, sources have confirmed to 90min.

The 25-year-old moved to Portugal in the summer after two hugely successful seasons with Coventry City in the Championship, whom he scored 40 goals for across 97 appearances in all competitions.

Gyokeres’ 21 Championship goals almost fired Coventry to promotion to the Premier League last season, but the Swede was on the losing side in the play-off final as Luton Town booked their place in England’s top flight with a 6-5 win on penalties.

His relentless goalscoring form persuaded Sporting CP to part ways with a club-record €20m in July, with Gyokeres penning a five-year contract in the Portuguese capital.

In his maiden Primeira Liga campaign, Gyokeres has continued to find the net with regularity, scoring six goals in his first nine appearances in the league. He has added a further five in cup and European competition, also laying on four assists for his teammates to help Sporting to the top of the table.

90min understands that Gyokeres’ form has not gone unnoticed by Serie A giants AC Milan, who are piecing together their list of striker targets for 2024.

Milan currently have 37-year-old Olivier Giroud leading the line at San Siro, and although the Frenchman has been scoring goals – his winner over PSG in the Champions League on Tuesday was his seventh in all competitions – there’s an acceptance that a fresher, younger option will soon be required to take the club forward.

Giroud has eight months remaining on his contract in Milan, with the club now assessing their options ahead of the January transfer window.

Gyokeres is also generating interest from Borussia Dortmund, who currently top Group F in the Champions League after beating Newcastle United 2-0, while West Ham United and Brentford are keeping an eye on his progress after previously showing an interest over the summer.

90min understands, however, that Gyokeres is currently in no hurry to return to England, with his focus on helping Sporting push on in the league in addition to securing qualification for the knockout stages of the Europa League.
