Andre Onana reflects on pressures of playing for Man Utd

Andre Onana has insisted he was prepared for the scrutiny he’s been under since joining “one of the biggest clubs in the world” in Manchester United.

The goalkeeper became United’s new number one during the summer, having signed from Inter for a whopping £47.2m, but struggled for form during his first few weeks at the club.

Onana was heavily criticised for his performances in defeats to Bayern Munich and Galatasaray in the UEFA Champions League in particular, with the goalkeeper making calamitous errors in both games. The former Inter man has bounced back from his shaky start in recent games however, making a stunning last minute penalty save in a much-needed win over FC Kobenhavn.

The 27-year-old was once again in good form for the Red Devils at the weekend, earning plaudits for keeping a clean sheet in United’s narrow win over Fulham.

Speaking after the game to NBC Sports, Onana discussed the pressures of playing for the Red Devils.

“You have to be prepared to play for Manchester United. It is the price to pay when you’re playing for such a big club,” he explained.

“If you don’t win, everyone is upset. That is normal. We are Manchester United. We have to try and win everything. For me it is good. It means you are used to winning. We have to do everything to win even if we are not in a good situation. Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world, so they always have to try to win.

“Sometimes you can lose but you have to fight for every game. Sometimes we make mistakes. This is part of life. At this club we will always fight. We try to do our best, we will go for everything. We showed a lot of character. I’m happy for the willingness and togetherness.”

Onana will be hoping he can keep his sixth clean sheet of the season in all competitions when United face off against Kobenhavn once again in the Champions League in midweek.
