Andrew Robertson returns to Liverpool squad against Fulham

Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson has been named in a matchday squad for the first time in more than three months as the Reds face Fulham in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

90 minutes stands between Liverpool and the final at Wembley next month, having secured a 2-1 comeback win in the first leg at Anfield recently.

Robertson’s return to the group was expected and his name duly appeared on the bench when the teams were confirmed an hour before kick-off.

The 29-year-old suffered a dislocated shoulder while on international duty for Scotland back in October and later underwent surgery for a more permanent fix to the problem.

Robertson hasn’t played for Liverpool since a 2-2 draw with Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League on 8 October, not far off four months ago.

“He trained yesterday with the team. It’s now 13 weeks, he had his meeting with the surgeon to make sure that everything is right to go into full contact – it’s clear,” Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders said when he addressed the media on Tuesday.

“He did a lot of work and really good rehab throughout the last period, so he’s fit in terms of sports science. Now he has to get fit with proper team training.”

With Kostas Tsimikas also ruled out in recent weeks, Joe Gomez has been filling at left-back in Robertson’s absence. It remains to be seen whether he will get on the pitch against Fulham, with minutes perhaps more likely if the tie is comfortably in Liverpool’s favour in the second half.
