Ange Postecoglou shoots down Jurgen Klopp’s replay request over VAR error

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has brushed off calls from Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp to replay their recent fixture.

“Significant human error” was to blame as VAR incorrectly ruled out a goal from Luis Diaz when the two sides met last week – Spurs would go on to win 2-1 – after which Klopp claimed the game should be replayed.

While Postecoglou understood Klopp’s frustration, the Australian argued a simple officiating mistake cannot lead to a replay.

“There’s got to be some sort of threshold and I don’t think a mistake is the threshold for that,” Postecoglou said.

“If we strayed into integrity or misappropriation of the law then maybe there’s something there, but ultimately, when you strip it all back, it was a mistake. It was unique and unprecedented, but it was still a mistake.

“If your threshold for a replay is mistakes by individuals, then that’s 365 games a year I reckon.”

Postecoglou went on to admit he would be happy to see VAR removed from the game unless major changes are made.

“I would [scrap VAR] in its current form,” he admitted. “I just don’t think that technology is ready for our game. I’ve got zero against goal-line technology. It’s a no-brainer and it works for our game.

“Our game is unique. People say, ‘Let’s get referees explaining their decisions’. Oh my God – seriously? Could you imagine sitting there listening to a referee explaining every decision in the game?”

The Spurs boss’ comments on VAR came after Chelsea’s Mauricio Pochettino admitted he lacked faith in those behind the system to use it properly.

“I trust in VAR. I trust in the car – but not the driver. That is the problem,” Pochettino said.
