Arsenal’s best and worst players in Community Shield win

Arsenal secured their first win over Manchester City in three years on Sunday in the Community Shield.

After going behind in the 77th minute, the Gunners fought back well to snatch a 101st minute equaliser to take the game to penalties.

Arsenal then capitalised on Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri missing their spot kicks to win the Community Shield for the 17th time.

Here’s who 90min picked as Mikel Arteta’s best performing players in the game:

William Saliba – 7/10

It’s fair to say that one of the main reasons Arsenal’s title challenge petered out was William Saliba’s season-ending back injury.

Now back to full fitness, the towering centre-back showed Gunners’ fans exactly what they were missing at the tail-end of last season during the win at Wembley Stadium. The fact that Erling Haaland had an xG of 0 during the game on Sunday tells you all you need to know about Saliba’s performance.

Honourable mention

Leandro Trossard – 7/10

The Belgian has quietly been rather fantastic for Arsenal since joining the club back in January, and he did his chances of becoming a regular starter plenty of favours with his camoe appearance on Sunday.

It was Trossard’s strike on goal which, after a huge deflection, would end up in the back of the net and he followed that up with a cool penalty in the shootout too.

Kai Havertz – 5/10

Utilised as a false nine due to the absence of Gabriel Jesus, the big money signing didn’t exactly impress in his first notable game for Arsenal.

The German had his chances in the first half but squandered both and his hold-up play generally wasn’t up to scratch on the day.

Room for improvement…to say the very least.

Dishonourable mention

Gabriel Martinelli – 5/10

Arsenal’s front three generally weren’t very impressive on Sunday. Gabriel Martinelli struggled to wriggle away from Kyle Walker at Wembley, and just didn’t contribute in the way you’d expect him to in the final third.
