Aurelien Tchouameni tipped for early Real Madrid return against Villarreal

Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni has been tipped to make a surprise early comeback from a foot fracture when the club face Villarreal in La Liga on Sunday night.

Tchouameni has missed Madrid’s last eight games across La Liga and the Champions League due to the injury he suffered during the Clasico win over Barcelona at the end of October.

Six weeks was at the shorter end of the potential recovery timeline, with not getting back on to the pitch until 2024 also a possibility. But Relevo suggests the intention is for the Frenchman to be involved this weekend as long as there is no late setback.

Despite being in and out of favour last season, Tchouameni was a regular starter prior to his injury, beginning on the bench for only two of the games for which he has been available.

His comeback could allow him to get minutes on the pitch in the final two games before the winter break against Villarreal and Alaves, before a welcome period of rest again.

A fully fit Tchouameni’s presence in the squad in January will be a welcome boost. Madrid are scheduled to play six games across three competitions during the month but it could rise to nine if they progress to the Supercopa de Espana final and through the early rounds of the Copa del Rey.

In Tchouameni’s absence, Luka Modric has had something of a reprieve at the age of 38. The Madrid legend, starting more consistently than at any point during the early part of the season.

Madrid would go top of La Liga with a win over Villarreal on Sunday, but perhaps only temporarily. Current leaders Girona are in action a day later against Alaves.
