Barcelona vs Porto: Complete head-to-head record

Barcelona and Porto: two giants of the Iberian Peninsula.

Both sides have storied histories in European competition and have been crowned Champions League winners in the 21st century – Barcelona on four occasions since the millennium and Porto grabbing their second European Cup in 2004.

The two teams have been relatively frequent competitors in the past, their first meeting dating all the way back to 1972.

Here is the complete head-to-head record between Barcelona and Porto.

Barcelona‘s first encounter with the Portuguese side came during the 1972/73 season in the first round of the old UEFA Cup, the Catalan side travelling to Porto’s previous stadium Estadio das Antas.

Rinus Michels’ Barcelona side may have taken a first-half lead through striker Jose Antonio Barrios, but two goals in three minutes just after half-time changed the complexion of the tie. Flavio Minuano drew level before Abel Miglietti put Porto ahead, with the latter grabbing his second with 67 minutes on the clock to secure victory.

Despite getting beyond Club Brugge in the second round, Porto fell short against Dynamo Dresden in the quarter-final of the UEFA Cup, losing both legs to their German opponents.

Despite losing 3-1 in Portugal, Barca were the side celebrating on this occasion at Estadio das Antas. That’s because, having won the first leg 2-0, the late Terry Venables had helped the Catalonian giants to the quarter-final of the European Cup in the 1985/86 campaign.

Having only come on with half-an-hour remaining, Porto’s Juary was quick to unsettle Barcelona with two goals in the space of four minutes. While the Brazilian would go on to grab his hat-trick in the dying embers of the match, it was Steve Archibald’s second-half strike that sent Venables’ men through on away goals.

The future England manager would come incredibly close to lifting Barcelona’s first European Cup, reaching the final before losing at the hands of Steaua Bucuresti over two legs.

Barcelona would meet Porto once more in Europe’s premier competition, this time in the reformatted Champions League in 1994. It was a big occasion, the two sides battling it out in the semi-final at Camp Nou.

The hosts would run out comfortable winners as they chased a second European Cup in three seasons, a first-half brace from Hristo Stoichkov added to by Ronald Koeman’s strike. Porto were reduced to ten men with half-an-hour remaining after the dismissal of Joao Pinto, with Barca strolling past Bobby Robson’s side – the Englishman would take the hotseat at Camp Nou two years later.

Barcelona were unable to secure the trophy, however, hammered 4-0 in the final by Milan in Athens.

Barcelona had enjoyed a comfortable win in the two teams’ last meeting six years earlier and history would repeat itself during the 1999/00 Champions League campaign.

In the second group stage of the competition, Jardel gave Porto an early lead after just five minutes, but a free-kick from Rivaldo, a header from Frank de Boer and an effort from Patrick Kluivert would offer Barcelona a two-goal lead at the break.

Jardel gave Barca a scare with his second of the match, but Rivaldo would get a brace of his own to secure victory late on for the home side in a six-goal affair.

While both sides would progress to the knockout rounds, Porto would fall short in the quarter-finals, while Barca suffered defeat to Valencia in the semis to deny the world a Clasico final with Real Madrid.

During one of the most recent meetings between Barca and Porto, there was silverware on the line.

The two teams clashed in the UEFA Super Cup in 2011, Pep Guardiola’s side having won the Champions League the previous season and Porto having beaten fellow Portuguese side Braga in the Europa League final.

As is often the case in the Super Cup, it was the Champions League holders that claimed another trophy. Goals at the end of either half from Lionel Messi and Cesc Fabregas gave Barcelona a comfortable victory, with Porto ending the game with just nine men after red cards for Rolando and Fredy Guarin.
