Beth Mead was cruelly denied her place at this summer’s Women’s World Cup because of injury, the Lionesses star has still been able to create a unique bit of history.
In partnership with McDonald’s in celebration of the tournament, Mead has become the first ever female player to get the ‘Big Head’ treatment.
The mini figurines of players with an oversized head are part of cult football fandom. Over 1,000 individual male players have been created as ‘Big Heads’ over the decades. There had never been a woman, but that has changed with Mead, who won the Golden Boot and Golden Ball at Euro 2022.
The Mead figurine has been revealed by McDonald’s at the National Football Museum as part of the ‘Batteries Not Included Exhibition’ that celebrates football toys throughout the ages.
“It’s incredible to see a mini me in the National Football Museum. It is truly amazing to be the first ever women’s player to have their own ‘Big Head’,” a proud Mead said.
“It feels really special, for this figurine to be joining football memorabilia through the ages and hopefully this is just the start of seeing more football collectables from the women’s game. I can’t wait to get my figurine into the hands of fans across the country in time for the World Cup.”
As many as 10,000 figurines have been produced so that eager fans can get one.
Beth’s limited edition figurines will be given out to football fans across the country during the tournament’s key fixtures this summer and fans can find out where they can pick one up by keeping an eye on McDonald’s social channels throughout the FIFA Women’s World Cup™ 2023.
