Caleb Porter named New England Revolution head coach

Caleb Porter joins the New England Revolution as the new head coach ahead of the 2024 Major League Soccer season.

He replaces Bruce Arena, who led the team as manager and sporting director from May 2019 to September 2023. He propelled the Revolution to their first ever Supporters’ Shield in 2021 when setting the record for most points in a regular season with 73 and an MLS Cup appearance in 2020.

The coach compiled a 60W-31L-42D MLS record during his tenure, before being placed on administrative leave on July 30 amid allegations of “insensitive and inappropriate remarks”.

Arena then resigned in September, leaving Curt Onalfo to continue as interim sporting director and Richie Williams as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2023 campaign.

Now, Porter will take over in the hopes of guiding the Revolution to more silverware.

“Caleb Porter is a gifted and respected coach with more than two decades of coaching experience who has delivered MLS Cup championships to both of his previous clubs,” Onalfo said in a statement.

“Caleb has consistently demonstrated the leadership and tactical acumen needed to build a winning team in our league. We know he is the right person to lead our team, which we believe is already well-positioned to compete for trophies.”

The coach arrives with extensive league experience, previously leading the Portland Timbers (2015) and the Columbus Crew (2020) to lift the MLS Cup.

“I’m honored to be named as the head coach of the New England Revolution. I’d like to start by thanking Robert and Jonathan Kraft, president Brian Bilello, and sporting director Curt Onalfo for this incredible opportunity,” Porter said.

“Throughout the interview process, it was clear the character, passion and ambition that the people in this club possess and I immediately felt connected and aligned with their strategy and values. The Revolution have a rich history and I’m driven to build off that strong foundation and help the players add to their legacy with the club.

“Lastly, I’m extremely motivated to reward the supporters for their undying loyalty over the past 27 years. I will work relentlessly to bring the first MLS Cup to this storied club and New England.”

Porter will debut with the Revolution in February as the 2024 MLS season kicks off.
