Chelsea vs Newcastle – Carabao Cup: TV channel, team news, lineups and prediction

Chelsea welcome Newcastle United to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening in the Carabao Cup quarter-final, with both sides entering the game following convincing weekend wins.

The Blues, who have lost the last two Carabao Cup finals they have played in, beat Sheffield United 2-0 in the Premier League to get back to winning ways on Saturday. The domestic cup competitions are the only viable path to silverware for Mauricio Pochettino and his side this season, the west London club having beaten AFC Wimbledon, Brighton and Blackburn Rovers en route to the final eight.

Newcastle have never won any iteration of the Carabao Cup before, coming close last year but losing 2-0 in the final to Manchester United. They have already knocked out the Red Devils in the last round, as well as their rivals Manchester City, and will be looking to conquer Chelsea for the second time this campaign.

Here is your preview of Newcastle’s trip to Chelsea on Tuesday.

While Chelsea have welcomed a few injured stars back recently, they have been quickly replaced in the treatment room by teammates as the Blues’ extensive injury list continues to wreak havoc on Pochettino’s plans.

Long-term absentees Romeo Lavia, Wesley Fofana, Ben Chilwell, Trevoh Chalobah and Carney Chukwuemeka remain sidelined, while Marc Cucurella will be missing for Newcastle’s visit due to an ankle injury.

Goalkeeper Robert Sanchez will miss out after sustaining an injury against Everton, as will captain Reece James who was substituted against the Toffees too. Lesley Ugochukwu is nearing a return to fitness but will be absent midweek.

Christopher Nkunku was an unused substitute against Sheffield United last weekend and may be offered his first minutes in a Chelsea shirt.

Chelsea predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): Petrovic; Gusto, Silva, Badiashile, Colwill; Caicedo; Fernandez; Palmer, Gallagher, Sterling; Jackson.

Newcastle have plenty of injuries of their own to contend with, Howe losing two players in the first half against Fulham at the weekend. Fabian Schar and Joelinton were both withdrawn against the Cottagers, and while their injuries aren’t thought to be too serious, they may still miss out on Tuesday’s action.

Long term absentees Elliot Anderson, Matt Targett, Nick Pope, Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes are still injured, while Sandro Tonali remains suspended. Joe Willock and Javi Manquillo are getting closer to a return but will miss out on Tuesday’s game.

Alexander Isak was a surprise omission from Newcastle’s squad for Fulham at the weekend, the Swede still struggling with a groin problem. It remains unclear whether or not he will be fit enough to travel to Chelsea.

Lewis Hall will miss out on a return to Stamford Bridge as he is ineligible to face his parent club, the youngster currently on loan with the Magpies, but Sven Botman did make a cameo against Fulham on Saturday after a long layoff.

Newcastle predicted lineup (4-3-3): Dubravka; Trippier, Lascelles, Burn, Livramento; Longstaff, Guimaraes, Miley; Almiron, Wilson, Gordon.

While Pochettino and Howe could use this as an opportunity to rest players amid their vast number of injuries, a shot at silverware may force them to field strong lineups.

If so, Tuesday’s match should be an engaging affair, Newcastle having recently ran out 4-1 winners at St James’ Park against Chelsea. The Blues have been so inconsistent that it’s impossible to predict which side of them we will see, while the Magpies have struggled to balance their extra workload this term.

However, Newcastle remain the more settled team and their recent Carabao Cup performances against the two Manchester clubs perhaps make them slight favourites for this one.

Prediction: Chelsea 1-2 Newcastle
