Dani Carvajal names three most impactful Real Madrid teammates across his career

Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal has picked out three players from across his career at the Santiago Bernabeu that left the best impression on him.

Carvajal came through the ranks in Real Madrid’s Castilla team before joining Bayer Leverkusen in 2012 for €5m (£4.3m). After one impressive season in Germany, Los Blancos exercised a buy-back clause to bring the defender back to the Spanish capital for €6.5m (£5.6m).

Since returning to the Santiago Bernabeu, Carvajal has become one of the most decorated players in Real Madrid history, winning 22 trophies – including five Champions Leagues – and making 379 appearances.

Speaking to Universo Valdano while away with the Spain national team, Carvajal was asked to name the Real Madrid teammates that had impacted him the most during his storied spell with the club.

“Cristiano [Ronaldo], Sergio Ramos and Luka Modric. They are people who talk to you and you have to be conscious of all of your five senses, they talk to you and you have to take notes,” he said.

“You see them arriving at 6 in the morning and starting to train…it’s brutal. Luka, on top of that, has been able to take such a small country to a World Cup final. He arrived here almost with lead feet and how he went about beating everyone is incredible.”

While Modric remains at Real Madrid, Ronaldo departed in 2018, with Ramos following him out the exit door in 2021.

Carvajal also spoke on his love for the club and how painful the thought of ever leaving would be.

“I love Real Madrid. I think when it’s time to leave, it must be one of most difficult things ever,” he said to Movistar.

“It’s not just what Madrid is, it’s the dimension that it has. Going to stadiums, it’s full, in hotels hundreds of fans receive us.”
