Erik ten Hag explains how Rasmus Hojlund will end goal drought

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag believes Rasmus Hojlund will start scoring goals again once their frontline has a “better balance” to create chances.

Hojlund arrived at the Red Devils from Atalanta over the summer for an initial £64m transfer fee, though add-ons could take this sum to £72m.

While the Denmark international was the one bright spark in United’s unsuccessful Champions League campaign in which they crashed out at the group stage – scoring five goals in six games – Hojlund is yet to find the net in his 13 Premier League appearances.

Hojlund’s next chance to score comes at lunchtime on Saturday when United travel to West Ham. At his pre-match press conference, Ten Hag was relaxed about the striker’s goal drought, insisting it’s a team effort to find goals and create chances.

“Of course we are open and he is open, his mentality is great,” Ten Hag said.

“He is a very good performer under stress. Also it’s about [Marcus] Rashford, [Alejandro] Garnacho, Antony, Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay. There are many, and don’t forget our full-backs who have to be a big part in that.

“We work on that as a group and with a full complement and better balance, we should create more chances.

“We can definitely improve. It is not about one player, it’s a group of all of us. My philosophy is we have to attack with 11. We have to get movement better, and the decision making on the ball has to be better.

“Sometimes we have to be more clinical. The best chance at Liverpool was ours, it was a great attempt.”

United have scored only 18 goals in 17 Premier League matches ahead of this weekend’s clash at the London Stadium. Midfielder McTominay has grabbed five of those, while Fernandes and Rashford are the only other players to have multiple goals to their name.
