Erling Haaland’s record in the Manchester derby

Erling Haaland wasted little time making himself known during his first ever Manchester derby.

The Norwegian striker grabbed a hat-trick in a one-sided 6-3 win for Manchester City over rivals United in 2022, signalling to the rest of England and Europe just how dangerous he would be aligned with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne and Phil Foden.

Now into only in his second season at the club, Haaland has not played a huge number of Manchester derbies but his record in this fixture still makes for very interesting reading.

Here is Haaland’s complete record against Manchester United since joining Man City.

Haaland has laid waste to almost every single opponent he has come across since he joined City in the summer of 2022 and United are one of the teams he has managed to score against.

He has played three matches already against Man Utd, but only one of them has featured goals for the Norwegian.

Haaland’s very first match against the team he came close to joining when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in charge saw him really rub salt into the wounds of Man Utd fans.

It was an embarrassing day for the Red Devils, with the scoreline ending much more kindly at 6-3 having been 6-1 down with fewer than ten minutes to play. Three of City’s six goals were scored by Haaland.

His first goal was a header from a corner which Tyrell Malacia couldn’t prevent from crossing the line to put City 2-0 up before Haaland swiftly made it 3-0 with an instinctive finish after a great pass from Kevin De Bruyne.

The hat-trick was completed when he volleyed in a cross from close range, making it 5-1 to Pep Guardiola’s side.

Given what he did in the first meeting of the season, Man Utd fans were understandably concerned about Haaland and Man City rocking up at Old Trafford.

As it turned out, there was a lot less to fear this time around. City did take the lead through Jack Grealish, but goals from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford secured victory for the Red Devils.

As for Haaland, he was anonymous for essentially the entire contest. He had two shots in the whole game, neither of which were on target, and only touched the ball 19 times with an xG of 0.2.

It was a game to forget and one that really accelerated the narrative that he disappears in big games.

The final game of the domestic season for both of these teams, Man City lifted the FA Cup but not with a huge amount of help from Haaland. His performance in this game was not too different to the second derby of the Premier League in 2022/23.

The Norwegian had three shots during the final at Wembley, two being on target. He carried a threat but he was nothing like his usual self. It was Ilkay Gundogan who stole the show, scoring twice and securing the second trophy in Man City’s treble.

At the moment, Haaland’s record against Man Utd looks very respectable, but it is relevant that all of those goals and assists came in one game.

There is little more Man City fans can expect from Haaland, but they would love to see him score more regularly against Manchester United over the course of this season and going forward.

Man Utd are the big six team Haaland has had the most joy against in his career, with Arsenal coming second having scored twice against the Gunners.

He has failed to register a goal or an assist against Chelsea or Liverpool so far, although he has only faced Liverpool once. It’s a part of his game that needs addressing, but the goals will surely come in good time.

By the end of the 2023/24 season, it may be a very different story.
