A ripple of excitement cascaded around Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie hall when Group D for Euro 2024 was drawn.
Favourites France, whose manager Didier Deschamps was not among the crowd after falling ill, were joined by Ralf Rangnick‘s upwardly mobile Austria, 1988 European champions the Netherlands and the nation to qualify from Path A of the play-offs.
The final member of a competitive Group D will not be decided until March. One of Poland, Estonia, Wales or Finland will complete the quartet once they have navigated their single-legged play-off semi-finals and final.
The crowd in Hamburg may have been excited but those play-off nations may have been hoping for a more favourable draw.

The first 50 games of Euro 2024 will be evenly distributed between the broadcasting giants of the BBC and ITV in the United Kingdom. The final match of the month-long footballing jamboree will be shown by both holders.
