Euro 2024: When is the group stage draw?

For some nations, qualification for the 2024 European Championships has been a gruelling campaign that began back in March. Others have navigated the process with far more ease.

UEFA haven’t exactly streamlined the system. The complementary role played by the UEFA Nations League ensures that the full fleet of 24 nations competing in this summer’s continent jamboree will not be known by the time of the tournament draw, which is just around the corner.

In the absence of all the participants, here is everything else you need to know about the Euro 2024 draw.

Following the final matches of the draining qualification campaign conducted over the November international break, the Euro 2024 draw will take place on Saturday 2 December.

The draw will commence at 17:00 (GMT) or 18:00 (CET) in the sleek Elbphilharmonie concert hall in Hamburg, overlooking the Elbe River.

The draw will be available to stream on UEFA’s official website or the federation’s YouTube channel. Interested spectators can also tune in using the UEFA EURO 2024 app.

UEFA have a history of fumbled tournament draws. In December 2021, the powers that be behind European football’s governing body were forced to entirely redo the draw for the Champions League round of 16 due to a computing error. Watch out for any gaffs in the upcoming ceremony.

As many as 21 of the 24 teams travelling to Euro 2024 will have been confirmed by the end of the November international break. One of those is obviously hosts Germany and they will be joined by the winners and runners-up of the ten qualifying groups.

The three other teams at Euro 2024 will be decided based on a play-off between the 12 teams that performed best at the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League, excluding any sides that have already qualified for next summer’s tournament.

That play-offs will take place in March, over three months after the Euro 2024 draw.

The 24 teams in the draw will be separated into four different pots based on their performance in qualifying. Each group will be made up of four teams, one from each pot.

World Cup runners-up France were one of three teams to first qualify for the finals in October 2023. Roberto Martinez left Belgium to take charge of Portugal at the turn of the year, serenely steering a side still spearheaded by Cristiano Ronaldo through qualifying. In Martinez’s absence, Belgium also booked an early ticket to Germany under the stewardship of Domenico Tedesco, who is seven months younger than Ronaldo incidentally.
