Suspensions for Tottenham pair Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie and long-term injuries to Newcastle duo Dan Burn and Sven Botman mean most FPL defences are in tatters approaching Gameweek 12.

Getting points at the back can be the difference between positive and negative gameweeks and there are plenty of options to consider ahead of the weekend.

We’ve selected the top picks in defence in conjunction with Fantasy Football Hub’s powerful AI Points Predictions tool for FPL Gameweek 12.

Pervis Estupinan

Pervis Estupinan is set to make his return from injury in the Europa League on Thursday evening and should immediately become a fancied FPL option again too.

He racked up four attacking returns in the opening six gameweeks of the season with a goal and three assists and while Brighton are still searching for their first clean sheet of the campaign, their defensive record has improved in recent games with just six goals conceded in their last four gameweeks.

Opponents Sheffield United have scored just nine goals this season, with only three of those coming on the road across five fixtures.

Jamaal Lascelles

Despite injuries mounting up in Newcastle United’s defence, they’ve continued to put in good performances at the back.

Since Jamaal Lascelles came in at centre-back he’s been involved in three clean sheets in five games and there’s no doubt the shutouts could continue given their upcoming fixture list. He remains at a bargain price of just £4.0m.

Newcastle have conceded a league best record of just eight big chances on their goal over the course of this season, with only three coming in their five away games. Meanwhile, Bournemouth have scored just nine goals this campaign, with only Burnley striking less with eight.

Tyrick Mitchell

Crystal Palace have shown excellent defensive consistency in recent weeks, keeping four clean sheets in the last six gameweeks. Only Newcastle have a better defensive record in this period.

Left-back Tyrick Mitchell is the best budget route into this defence, having played consistently in the Eagles defence this season.

Mitchell offers some attacking threat, having scored against Burnley in Gameweek 11, and also has one assist this season. At just £4.6m, Mitchell is a player you can buy for the long term and bench in his more challenging fixtures. Palace have a kind run over the next four gameweeks.
