Harry Kane potential shirt numbers at Bayern Munich

It appears to be a matter of time until Harry Kane is announced by Bayern Munich as their new striker, with the England captain’s long-proposed move from Tottenham Hotspur finally sanctioned by Daniel Levy.

The Bavarian giants have agreed to cough up €100m (£86.4m) for the 30-year-old, ending a transfer saga that has dominated the headlines for much of the summer.

Manchester United had been touted as a potential destination for Kane, after a period of lengthy flirtation, but the Red Devils and manager Erik ten Hag opted to spend money on the future, instead bringing in 20-year-old sensation Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta.

Kane’s move, barring any last-gasp hitches, will see him take over as Bayern’s primary goal-getter, filling the void left by Robert Lewandowski’s move to Barcelona 12 months ago.

But what number could Kane take in Bavaria having worn the number 10 ten shirt in north London for much of his career?

Kane’s shirt number history is more varied than some may imagine, though a lot of that is down to not having an assigned number when progressing through England’s youth ranks.

At club level, things are a little more simple. Kane started out at Tottenham wearing the number 37 shirt, before a loan move to Leyton Orient saw him take on the number 29. Loan spells at Norwich and Leicester saw him return to 37, while he also took on the number 9 jersey when playing at Under-21 level.

After breaking into Spurs’ first team during 2014/15, Kane switched to number 18 but just a year later had snaffled the 10 shirt – the number now being synonymous with him as he’s gone to become the club’s all-time record goalscorer.

For England’s senior team, Kane has worn 10, 12 and 18, but is settled as the number 9 for Gareth Southgate and has worn that at all major international tournaments.

Kane’s number 10 shirt is currently occupied at Bayern by former Manchester City winger Leroy Sane, and there’s no reason to think the German will be giving that up.

It would actually be a bit of a miracle if Kane didn’t take on the available number 9 shirt made famous in recent years by the aforementioned Lewandowski, who plundered 238 Bundesliga goals for Bayern and 344 in all competitions across an eight-season stretch.

The fact Kane is being brought in to directly replace Lewandowski, albeit a year on, adds further weight to the Tottenham legend taking it on.

Should Kane and Bayern want to go in a different direction, numbers 12, 15, 16, 17 and 18 are available, as well as a raft of options in the 20s and 30s. But make no mistake about it, Kane has big broad shoulders and is used to handling pressure – he’ll be desperate to wear 9 as he begins a new life in Munich.
