Ivan Perisic suffers complex ACL injury in Tottenham training

Ivan Perisic is unlikely to play again this season after suffering an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury in Tottenham Hotspur training.

The Croatian has enjoyed a fine start to the 2023/24 campaign under Ange Postecoglou, impressing in cameos from the bench. He notably grabbed the assist for Richarlison’s equaliser during Saturday’s late 2-1 win against Sheffield United.

But Perisic’s season is likely over having suffered a ‘complex’ ACL injury, Tottenham have confirmed.

A statement from Spurs read: “We can confirm that Ivan Perisic has suffered a complex Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury in his right knee.

“The experienced Croatia international sustained the injury in non-contact training and will undergo surgery. Wishing you well in your recovery, Ivan.”

Perisic joined Tottenham in the summer of 2022 on a free transfer from Inter. He registered 12 assists in all competitions in his debut season in England and played most of the campaign at wing-back.

With Postecoglou reverting to 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 formations, Perisic has played higher up the pitch again in his brief time working with the Greek-Australian coach.

Perisic’s contract with Spurs expires at the end of the 2023/24 season and he is unlikely to return from injury before his deal runs out.

The 34-year-old is also facing a race against time to return before Croatia’s Euro 2024 campaign, with the nation almost assured of their spot in next summer’s finals.

Perisic is Croatia’s third-most capped player of all time behind only Luka Modric and Darijo Srna.
