Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez announces LA Galaxy exit

Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez will not return to the LA Galaxy for the 2024 campaign, parting ways with the Western Conference club after four seasons.

The forward’s contract with the club expired, after originally joining on a three-year Designated Player deal in 2020 and earning an automatic renovation during the 2022 MLS campaign when reaching certain pre-established numbers.

“We are grateful to Javier for his dedication and contributions to the LA Galaxy,” said LA Galaxy Head Coach and Sporting Director Greg Vanney. “In four seasons with the Galaxy, Javier was a passionate leader for our club on and off the field. We wish him all the best moving forward.”

Chicharito played an integral part in the team’s success, recording 39 goals and six assists in 82 games across all competitions. He stands as the seventh all-time in club history, propelling the forward to two MLS All Star appearances, two LA Galaxy Player of the Year awards and two consecutive team Golden Boot trophies.

In 2022, Hernández ranked tied for fourth in MLS with 18 goals scored and two assists in 32 regular-season games played.

“Life becomes exciting when you allow yourself to change and evolve to new challenges. Thanks to everyone who was involved in my journey these 4 years.Thank you for everything @lagalaxy.”

The player last featured for LA Galaxy during the 2023 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup Quarterfinal match against Real Salt Lake on June 7 when he sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee.

LA Galaxy now boast an open DP spot ahead of the 2024 campaign.
