LA Galaxy sign free agent goalkeeper John McCarthy to one-year contract

LA Galaxy have signed goalkeeper John McCarthy to a one-year contract through 2024 with an option for 2025 on a free transfer from LAFC.

McCarthy left LAFC following their MLS Cup defeat as a free agent, and stays in southern California to join their bitter rivals on a free transfer. McCarthy most notably saved two penalties during LAFC‘s shootout victory in 2022 MLS Cup over Philadelphia Union.

McCarthy was thrust into the final after Maxime Crepeau suffered a fractured leg in a last-ditch challenge in extra time, and his substitution will never be forgotten by the Black and Gold’s supporters.

“John brings a wealth of experience, ranging from playing in the USL to being the MVP of an MLS Cup Final, that is invaluable,” said LA Galaxy general manager Will Kuntz in a release.

“He is a veteran leader who will add depth and competition at the goalkeeper position and we are excited to add him to our group.”

The 31-year-old joins the Galaxy with just under 170 club appearances to his name, playing in between the sticks for fellow MLS sides Inter Miami and Philadelphia Union while also suiting up for Tampa Bay Rowdies in the USL.

McCarthy departs BMO Stadium after making 41 appearances for the Western Conference side, registering 15 clean sheets and just 45 goals conceded. McCarthy has kept 56 clean sheets and conceded 193 goals in his club career thus far.

McCarthy is expected to compete for the starting job with Jonathan Bond, who made 24 starts in goal for the Gs in 2023 and conceded 46 goals.

McCarthy’s departure from LAFC comes after club signed World Cup winning and longtime Tottenham Hotspur shot-stopper Hugo Lloris to a one-year deal, potentially signaling an end to Crepeau’s time with the Black and Gold.

The Galaxy open up the 2024 MLS season on February 25 against Inter Miami and Lionel Messi at Dignity Health Sports Park.
