Liverpool confirm extent of Trent Alexander-Arnold knee injury

Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders has confirmed that Trent Alexander-Arnold will be out for a “few weeks” with a knee injury he suffered during Sunday’s FA Cup win over Arsenal.

Alexander-Arnold was in fantastic form against the Gunners, with his dangerous set piece delivery leading to Jakub Kiwior’s own goal that opened the scoring for the Reds at the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking ahead of the Carabao Cup semi-final first leg clash with Fulham on Wednesday however, Lijnders revealed that Alexander-Arnold suffered an injury setback during the win.

“First of all, some not-that-good news, Trent hyperextended his knee during the last game,” said Lijnders. “So he has a little tear in the lateral ligament of his knee and he will need time to recover. He had a scan and he will be out for a few weeks, so let’s see after that.

“He will get some rest and then hopefully he can come back to where he was. Because this guy was decisive in all the games and was the one who created constantly for us from deep and gave the team a high level of flexibility. We will really miss him.”

The loss of Alexander-Arnold will come as a bitter blow to Jurgen Klopp’s team, who have relied on his ability to dictate play from both full-back and a central midfield role this season. In his absence, youngster Conor Bradley could be given more opportunities having impressed during a second half cameo at the weekend.

In better news for Liverpool fans, Lijnders did also reveal that Virgil van Dijk will be back in the squad on Wednesday after illness kept him out of the FA Cup game.

“Virgil is back,” the coach confirmed. “He did some runs yesterday on the pitch, looked good again. So he will be back in the squad, he recovered well. So it really helped him not to travel to London.”
