Man Utd duo absent from training before crunch Bayern Munich clash

Manchester United were without both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in Monday’s training session as they prepare for their crunch Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

United head into Tuesday’s game sitting last in their group and must beat the German champions if they are to avoid elimination, but Erik ten Hag’s men are also relying on Galatasaray and Copenhagen drawing, which would open the door for United to leapfrog both.

Ten Hag’s preparations for the game, however, have been handed a blow as United confirmed both Martial and Rashford missed Monday’s session through illness.

Both players featured in Saturday’s 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, with Martial starting the game and Rashford coming off the bench for the final ten minutes, but both players’ involvement against Bayern now appears to be in doubt.

Rasmus Hojlund is expected to start at striker but Ten Hag’s options around him will be limited. Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Facundo Pellistri are the only other senior forwards in the squad.

Ten Hag did not discuss either Martial or Rashford during his press conference but did admit that centre-back Victor Lindelof was his only doubt to make the game.

However, the Swede was later spotted in Monday’s training session, suggesting he will be fit enough to play a part on Tuesday.

“What I know is I never think in negative scenarios,” Ten Hag said as he previewed Tuesday’s crucial affair. “I only think positive.

“We know what we have to do, we have to win to stay in Europe, so it’s all about that. So I will prepare the team with that feeling, with that belief that we can do it. I think we have shown in the last weeks, when we are at our best, we can do it.”
