Martin Odegaard gives coy update on Arsenal contract talks

Martin Odegaard has refused to detail contract talks with Arsenal but insisted he is “very happy” at the club.

The midfielder has been a key player for Mikel Arteta’s side since joining on loan from Real Madrid in January 2021. He then penned a permanent four-year deal in August 2021 when the Gunners parted with £30m for his services.

Odegaard has since been given the captain’s armband and helped guide the club to second place in the 2022/23 Premier League.

90min reported back in May that Arsenal had been planning to open talks over a new contract with Odegaard. However, in an interview with Nettavisen, the club captain refused to get specific about how negotiations are progressing.

He said: “I don’t have much to say, apart from the fact that I am very happy at Arsenal and I hope I can be there for a long time. Beyond that, I have no comment right now. Now, it is the national team that is in focus.”

Odegaard was slightly more forthcoming in discussing his contract situation earlier in the summer in an interview with TV2, insisting he plans to stay in north London.

He added: “I have a few years left on the contract, I’m fine and I hope to be at the club for a long time to come.

“I have not spoken to them, that is not my task. To be honest, I don’t know how the situation is right now. Well, it’s not me who controls.”

The attacking midfielder’s current deal runs until 2025 but Arsenal have the option of extending that automatically by an extra year.
