Mary Earps wins 2023 The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper award

Manchester United and England goalkeeper Mary Earps has won the 2023 The Best FIFA Women’s Goalkeeper award.

Earps won the prize last year and retained her trophy by beating fellow nominees Mackenzie Arnold and Catalina Coll.

It comes shortly after the 30-year-old won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2023.

Speaking before the ceremony, when asked if she had any more room for individual awards, Earps said: “Oh my gosh, what an incredible problem to have, I’m not complaining. I can’t lie, it’s been an incredible six months, the bookshelf has been looking really healthy.

“This [ceremony] is the last one in a while so I don’t know when I’ll next get any.”

Speaking after her award win, she added: “Thank you very very much. Last year, when I won this award I didn’t get in team of the year, so I thought I would be done for the night.

“Thank you to all my coaches at England and United. I am just blown away. I talk a lot obviously about how it hasn’t been an easy journey. Some would say I took the scenic route. But it made me feel so much prepared for the challenges ahead.

“If you’re struggling and going through hell, keep going. It’s never too late to be exactly who you are.”

Earps played a pivotal role as England won the Finalissima against Brazil with a save from Tamires in the penalty shootout. She would make another spot-kick block in the World Cup final to deny Jenni Hermoso, though Olga Carmona’s 29th-minute effort still proved enough for Spain to upset the odds at Stadium Australia in Sydney.
