Mauricio Pochettino compares Chelsea job to electric chair

Mauricio Pochettino has admitted the head coach job at Chelsea is like sitting in an electric chair following their dismal run of form.

The Blues turned to Pochettino after a terrible 2022/23 campaign saw them finish 12th in the Premier League, but fortunes haven’t improved just yet under the Argentine.

Heading into Saturday’s clash with Sheffield United at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea again sit 12th in the standings. though could realistically end the weekend as low as 14th if results go against them.

At his pre-match press conference, Pochettino was asked about the pressure on him to get the Blues back on track.

“I am crazy – a little bit – all coaches are,” Pochettino replied. “We want to show we are normal people but we are not normal. That is why we are here. This is an electric chair!”

Pochettino suggested after Sunday’s loss at Everton that he needed several new players in the January transfer window and questioned Chelsea’s ‘reality’, but he insisted ahead of this weekend’s return to action that he still has trust in the club’s project.

“I am a person that always trusts and trusts until someone shows me I cannot trust anymore,” he continued.

“But I trust, I trust. Of course, I also know that I need to deliver in the job, and of course, it’s not only you need to deliver, but also to get some results. I know how it is in football. I trust, I trust, I really trust. That is why I am here.

“The communication is the same from the beginning of the season when we were in pre-season to today. Of course, it is the same communication. But no words [are not important] in football.

“The most important thing is being here. If I am here, it is because [the owners] trust. If at any moment they stop trusting, don’t worry; you will not see me here.”

90min reported earlier this week that Pochettino’s job is not at immediate risk despite a downturn in form in recent months.
