Osasuna face La Liga disciplinary action over ‘Mason Greenwood, die’ chants

Osasuna could face disciplinary action from La Liga after a section of their supporters directed abusive chants towards Mason Greenwood as he made his Getafe debut on Sunday.

Greenwood joined Getafe on loan from Manchester United this summer after the Red Devils accepted he should continue his career away from Old Trafford in the aftermath of charges of rape and sexual assault, all of which were dropped.

The 21-year-old came off the bench for the final 13 minutes of his side’s 3-2 victory over Osasuna, and while his introduction was cheered by many home fans, a section of Osasuna supporters were heard chanting “Greenwood, die” as he entered the field.

The Athletic report that the chants were heard by La Liga’s official match observer, who must now file a report which will lead to a disciplinary process.

Osasuna coach Jogoba Arrasate admitted his disappointment towards the chanting but also claimed the Getafe supporters were guilty of abuse themselves.

“The chants of ‘F**k Osasuna’ were very bad and the chants against Greenwood were very bad too. He is a player who, in the end, the justice system had its say,” he said. “He is a very good player. But if we talk about chants, we should talk about all the chants, not just some.”

Greenwood was making his first competitive appearance in 19 months after initially being suspended by United in early 2022, and his entry into the game appeared to be praised by former United teammate Amad Diallo.

Amad posted an image on social media of Greenwood coming off the bench accompanied by two heart emojis.
